Surf Fishing

I have a 14' rod and a 10' that I use when I go surf fishing, love the 14', best place to ask that I've found on the OBX is Whalebone tackle, its on the right as you get there, just ask the guy that runs the shop(older guy he had a beard last time I went but it's a minute) what is biting and what rigs you should use, and get your stuff there he's never steered me wrong on info(even the google review for the shop says he gives great info), and he's reasonably priced on tackle.

Did about 3 hours of research and I settled on Shimano Tiralejo fishing pole, Shimano Baitrunner 8000D and 50lb braided line.  Should have no problem pulling out most big boys.

That's a really good reel, my brother has reel that and I used it on a 8ft rod for the story below, but 50lb braided is super overkill and I'd advise against it. what is the length of the pole you're looking at? for surf I recommend a minimum of 10'(good surf that can also be used for pier fishing) I personally prefer my 14'(purely surf) but it will be more up to you and what you want to do with the rod.  I go cheaper on my surf rods, ugly stick rods and penn reels.  I have a very nice casting rod though, that's where I throw my money when spending more of rods/reels.

as far as 50Lbs goes, I've only once hooked up with something that I wished I had 50lb line on for ever....... and it was a fluke that it bit because I wasnt fishing for it drum when it bit, it was an estimated 80lb redfish(Red Drum) which would have been a state record for Louisiana if we landed it, and if we had not hooked up with it from a pier we probably would have. You should be good with anything 15-20lbs unless you really know what you're doing while seriously chasing bigger prey.

bigger the line the less you will feel the fish bite and the more(in the ocean) the water will drag it. I use 15-20lb line on average, it handles everything I fish for which is mostly drum when I surf fish.

Fish weight to line ratio you can land something around 40 lbs on 20lb line.  it's more about how much line you have and drag set(very important).

I love your post.  I will get a 30lbs /225.  I was watching a video on YouTube and dude kept catching big ass Cobias right where I'm planning on fishing.

Cobias have teeth, use a 80lb leader or a steel one if you fish for them, but all fishing is seasonal so make sure to ask what is running.

It's all about what is out there, when you are there.

I wouldn't spend as much on the rod if I were you, just get a cheaper but decent rod like an ugly stick and you will be good.

As to the reel, I prefer stradic's to everything else personally.

And Doc is right, that is far too heavy line for almost all surf fishing.  If you catch something that needs 50lb test, you probably don't want to get that thing on the beach.

Be mindful to surfers and swimmers, and throw it back if you aren't going to eat it,

in all honesty i have reached a point where it's hard for me to justify hunting or fishing for sport. and i don't eat fish

Makes sense.  Many become  pescaterian these days.  Thing is... Humans are destroying natural predators at record rates, leaving wildlife exploding at record numbers.  So hunting and fishing is justified to keep them in check.

    • 100%. And these same people will claim you have an agenda. You can't have it every way. We had the lowest rated defense in the league last year. Statistically the worst ever. By PFF grades (for whatever that's worth- but they are readily accepted, used, and conveyed by most "reputable" sources), the defense was the worst ever. Not only that, PFF rated our receiving corp the worst in football last season. The absolute worst... out of 32 teams. Which is why regardless of the lip service Canales and Morgan paid to the current guys, they knew it would be criminal not to give Bryce more help. People fixating on team stats and not taking these things into context are stupid, plain and simple, and I'm for one thankful they're not running this team (or probably anything for that matter bc they obviously can't discern reality. Again, going back to the eyeball test these Narrative Nancies seem to hate so much, did they not see the windows Bryce was putting balls into? Have the generally not watched much NFL? Please, please show me the film where all these NFL QBs are making throws like this to this point Bryce was "below average" down the stretch compared to them. Bryce made more wow throws in that 3 game stretch of the Bucs, Chiefs, and Eagles than every other QB combined in all the years since since Cam got hurt I genuinely am baffled by people that can watch throws like that and act like it's nothing. I guarantee you Steve Spagnola, Todd Bowles, and and Vic Fangio didn't think it was nothing after watching the little guy torch them with players those teams would be embarrassed to trot out at the skill position players. The national media spent all year making excuses for Mahomes not having elite weapons when he had multiple 1st & 2nd round talents at the skill positions along with future HoFers in Kelce and Hopkins. Bryce wasn't throwing for 300 yards every week with David Moore and Adam Theilen in spite of jaw dropping throws and you want to say the guy played below average. For those people, again, we ain't watching the same sport. And the name calling doesn't change that... The vitriol and projection... it's off the effing charts with these people.
    • "Well you see if you remove this terrible game that terrible game this other terrible game and then focus on these games you'll see he's actually one of the better QB's in the league and he's actually as good as Jayden Daniels". My god this place is delusional. I love it.
