Andy Benoit of MMQB (June 2015): Tannehill > Cam Newton

Andy Benoit, 10 Things I Think I Think, June 2015:

Quote

8. I think the Panthers will come to realize (if they don’t already) that they overpaid for Cam Newton. Entering his fifth season, Newton, 26, is essentially the same player now that he was entering his second season. He’s inconsistent in his mechanics and decision-making. He plays like someone who constantly has friends in his ear telling him that he’s the greatest. What he needs is a quarterbacks coach with the mettle to jump down his throat after a repeated mistake.

9. I think you also can’t blame the Panthers for overpaying for Newton. What choice did they have? Quarterbacks are rare in the NFL, even average ones. A team that’s been to the playoffs two straight years can’t plan to let its mid-20-year-old signal-caller leave soon via free agency. The only way to prevent that is to make him one of the five highest-paid quarterbacks in the game. That’s simply what an adequate NFL quarterback costs. Newton’s contract is not a testament to Newton—it’s a testament to the price of his position. It was the same with Ryan Tannehill, who got a new deal shortly before Newton did. (And by the way, Tannehill, who has improved each year in his career, is a much better player and long-term prospect than his Carolina counterpart).

Who cares (no offense to the OP)!

But I digress. LOL

Yes. Andy Benoit is/was an idiot (and let him perpetually hide in shame and sports writing purgatory for that comment).

He obviously doesn't follow the team, nor Newton.

Remember, Newton couldn't be doing all he's doing now out the blue. He would have had to have the foundation to start, and/or been working, building on it the past 4 seasons. This is what makes guys like this look like fools, and their outlandish statements (and lack of research, and/or football acumen).

He probably, just read or heard some meme's  from some unknowing haters or Internet people, then went with it.

Cam showed signs last season of what he's doing now (particularly the no huddle, and pre-snap line adjustments, etc.). But with all the injuries, turnover and revamping of the team, it wasn't meant to be.  Obviously, Mr. Benoit wasn't watching then, or even in 2013 when the team was 12-4 and Newton made the Pro bowl for his second time. Has Tannehill (who I like) ever made the Pro bowl?

And even if Newton never improved, he had tons more skill and potential (and showed more on the field than Tannehill ever did), so he would still be better.

It's amazing how so many National reporters, don't care about Newton and the teams injuries and turnovers last year in 2014, then want to compare him to other lesser QB's while doing so. You can't make this up.

Nonetheless, onward to The Arizona Cardinals, and not too much energy on this!

It's not that I care . . . it's just that I like to point and laugh at self serious mouth breathers pretending they are NFL scouts.

Andy Benoit is PFTCommenter with better grammar - except he's not doing it as satire.  He's the type of person I thoroughly enjoy feeling superior to.

Me. I care. I love looking back at these articles and laughing at them.

That was more so for the upcoming Arizona game, and not getting caught up into idiots like this (though we obviously have time to kill before the game). LOL

It's so obvious, Mr. Benoit doesn't follow football; the Panthers, looking for clicks, or doesn't like Cam Newton. Cause I like Tannehill myself. But I would have never said that in the least. LOL

As I said above: It's funny how, when Cam has an injury riddled season (with much Panther turnover). So many in the media ignore it. However, when it's other lesser QB's, their injuries (or teammates) are bandied about for all the world to hear. And then, they have the nerve to compare Cam to other QB's, knowing, or not knowing he's been injured (either scenario is bad), with all the turnover on said team.

Just be fair, and show reciprocity reporters. That's all.

Don't follow him much (which is why I was probably so dismissive).

But I'll take your word for it (PFT commenter with better grammar). LOL

As I recall, Tannehill was in the news this year for being a jerk to some of the Dolphins practice squad players (and them letting him know about it).

Yeah, after he got his big contract. He was heckling practice squad players about how much money he was making, and the little they did.

Real Jerk indeed.

There may have been a few other things as well.

But yes, he did catch some flak.

    • I have more faith in XL improving than I do in Tmac being a true number 1 recuever
    • Round 1. TMac arguably the best WR in the draft Round 2. Scour ton mentioned as a possible 1st round edge.     Texas A&M did not use him the same way Purdue did. After the 2023 season he was listed as a first round grade. I believe had Texas A&M used him like they did at Purdue he never makes it out of round 1. Round 3 Princely Umanmielen, we'll go by Princely.  Another highly graded player we got in a lower round. As the video suggests, even if he plays only on passing down it's a positive. Give him a couple of years to develop a he could be a three down player.  Round 4a Etienne IMO a huge upgrade over Blackshear. I can see him in a similar role as CMC without the heavy workload. He can run in between the tackles and has some shifty moves. Give Canales some flexibility. A fellow huddler pointed out UGA running backs don't see the field if they cannot pick up the blitz. Really good pick. Round 4b Ransom a hard hitting safety that has played three different positions on defense. Great pick Round 5a Cam Jackson a massive NT in round 5. I believe a solid rotational pick in a lower round. We added a beast that could make offenses quiver when he's lined up with Brown. Great Value  Round 5b Evans This is another player that can block and has good hands. He also had better seasons before 2024. As a rookie he's probably leaps and bounds better than Ian Thomas. I think he gives us a three headed monster at TE.  Round 6 Horn Jr. Many believe he's just going to be a KR/PR player. I believe there are going to be packages for him to get on the field as a WR. His speed with TMac and Thielen in the slot could be special. I'm really looking forward to seeing him in training camp. I've watched some film and he is very explosive.  Overall I love our picks. I honestly believe all of them will contribute this season. I don't believe we reached on one player in this draft.  This weekend we get a small look at these rookies
