PFF Grades and Analysis

Here's some interesting analysis I pulled from these 2 articles from PFF.

ARI- CAR Grades: https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2016/01/25/pro-ari-car-grades/

DEN- CAR Preview: https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2016/01/25/pro-super-bowl-preview-broncos-panthers/

On Thomas Davis:

Quote

He only played 31 snaps before injuring his arm, but linebacker Thomas Davis (+3.9) had a huge impact on the game in the first half. A standout against the run and in coverage, he allowed just two receptions for 20 yards, with all six of his tackles resulting in a defensive stop.

Talking about "The Bad" for the Panthers, this kind of pissed me off:

Quote

Targeting anyone else besides Olsen, Newton was 13-of-19 for 222 yards (11.7 yards per attempt), two touchdowns, and one interception. But take away two big chunks from WR Philly Brown (74.8) and Ted Ginn Jr. (72.5), both of which were the result of poor defense, rather than good plays by the receivers, and Newton’s YPA drops to just 5.7.

...Not good plays by the receivers? Yeah right.

Quote

Top performers:

LB Thomas Davis +3.9
RT Mike Remmers +3.9
S Kurt Coleman +3.4
QB Cam Newton +3.3
LG Andrew Norwell +3.3

Quote

The entire offensive line (even left tackle Michael Oher) graded positively in run blocking, and the strong run game allowed the Panthers to work the play-action, where Newton was seven-for-seven for 127 yards.

Mike Remmers and Michael Oher continued to step up their game, and will face their toughest challenge against Denver. This game presents some great match ups, especially between the Offensive and Defensive lines. This game will likely be won in the trenches.

Matchups to watch

LG Evan Mathis (89.5) vs. DT Kawaan Short (90.8): Mathis has had an interesting season, as he grades as PFF’s third-best guard. But that’s mostly because of his league-leading 95.4 run blocking grade; his 74.6 pass blocking grade is average, at best. Short has been one of the best interior defenders all season, and is very well-rounded. His 86.6 run defense grade ranks 18th among interior defenders, while his pass-rush has been incredibly strong at 90.1, the fifth-best mark.

RG Trai Turner (86.9) vs. DT Derek Wolfe (90.7): Turner has been very strong for the Panthers all season long, grading as our seventh-best guard. His pass blocking efficiency of 97.7 also ranks seventh among guards, and he’s allowed just one hurry these playoffs. Wolfe is an elite interior defender, and he’s strong against both the run and pass. Bursting onto the scene, he has 16 total pressures in his two playoff games, leading interior defenders with a 16.6 pass rushing productivity.

LOL @ that comment about the two big pass plays being more their bad D than our good O.

Philly ran a GREAT route to create that separation and then made a great move to turn a big play into a HUGE play.

Cam made a terrific throw to Ginn in tight coverage and then Ginn made a terrific catch on the ball after it got tipped and tightroped the sideline to get his feet down and pick up a few extra yards.

It wasn't like those plays were just blown coverages.  We MADE those plays.

I can't get into PFF bullshit.   If you take this play away or if you pretend this play didn't happen then so and so didn't do well.  Fuggin stat nerds is all they are.  Cam Newton wasn't in their top 10 QBs but Matt fuggin Ryan was hovering around the top 5 or 6th all year.  Gimme a break.

The Panthers can win if Cam Newton can figure out a 3-4 defense and limit turnovers. There are a lot of 3-4 defenses in the AFC but the NFC is mostly a 4-3 conference. If the Broncos can mix up a lot of coverages and blitzes to get hits on Newton and turnovers, that would give them a shot.

Liked this comment. If only we'd played a 3-4 defense like for instance the Cardinals, Packers, Redskins, Eagles, Saints (supposedly), Titans, Colts or Texans. Guess we might as well pack it up since we've never faced a 3-4 defense.

    • My father played Defensive End at Ohio State so naturally my kid is a huge Ohio State fan to go along with his being a huge Gamecock fan due to my ties to the school but last year he swore up and down we needed to draft Stroud number 1. I don't know if it was just being an Ohio State homer or what but he kept watching video after video of highlights and said Stroud was the future for us.  This past season he now claims we should have taken Rattler with one of our later round pics due to him saying he will be one of the huge steals of the draft and will be NFL ready within one season if it takes that. He said if Bryce busts completely we would have a future top QB to turn the team over to with Rattler taken in the fifth. From his prediction last year I'm starting to believe maybe they should hire him as a consultant for a few bucks a week. Hell, he is 13. They could pay him $50 a week for consulting and he would would think he is rich!
    • Yeah we know he is short blah blah blah. I don't have a ton of faith in Young to be the guy or the future but damn that joke is older than the why the chicken crossed the road.
