Does Cam Newton stay in the pocket for too long?

I think it has more to do with the confidence he has in his offensive line.  Those guys give him a lot of time back there.  And he milks it all he can to give the WR time to get open.  Like Scot says this shows how far h's come as a QB.  As he refines his game and he gets more weapons around him you will see that it will be more and more difficult to game plan against him.  I you play the pass he will run if you play him to run he will find a receiver.

Like Cam said, We have not seen anyone that we can compare him to.  He's unique.

"It does start with us up front, and we take tremendous pride in doing our job, and doing it the right way," left guard  Andrew Norwellicon-article-link.gif  said. "The team goes where the O-line goes."

Amen Norwell, Amen.

The only reason I mention it is cause Russel Wilson always seems to scramble and conjour up some lucky poo, granted their Oline is not as good but wud be nice to see Cam get some of those same plays.

He is more agile, but Cam should have a some nice scrambles after taking deep shots with Gin and Funchess.

I've noticed that cam, although he is a mobile qb, doesn't move around in the pocket very much. Yes standing tall in the pocket does work most of the ttime, but it seems he could avoid a lot of pressure simply by stepping up in the pocket. IMO I feel that cam has taken a lot of unnecessary sacks by trying to outrun the DE going backwards instead of running straight ahead. Ofcpurse with his production this is reaching a bit.

This is the first time in his career he's gotten any semblance of time in the pocket.  The huge improvement at the guard position has really allotted him the amount of time (sometimes more!) that is simply a requirement when passing from the pocket.

These young guards + Kalil have cleaned out the trash in the middle, allowing Cam a nice pocket to step into. Climbing a pocket keeps your momentum behind you, allowing freedom with your release while keeping sound mechanics.  Having to evade rushers (moving backwards, left or right) is a complete nightmare as you need to completely reset your feet before you can make a proper throw, which wastes precious time for another rusher to catch up to you.

Seriously though go back and rewatch some highlights/games in Cam's first two years.  Oftentimes a 3 man rush was generating pressure in a blink of an eye.  It is inexcusable for a 3 man rush to get to the QB in less than 3 seconds.

I really like how Steve Young described it. In his first 4 years Cam was willing to take off if thins got dicey. This year he is willing to hang in there and wait for things to develop. Young said something along the lines of "For 4 years it was I'm going, I'm going, I'm gone. This year it was more I'm staying, I'm staying, make the play."

True the O-line is much better this year than any other year. But it is also true that Cam is much more willing to allow the plays to develop. Call it what you want. Maturity, experience, or what ever. But he is now a pocket passer that can and will run. But only as a last resort.

He not only trust his teammates, but he also trust the play. That is the main reason he has developed as a pocket passer.

This is for several reasons:

1) Wilson can't throw from a crowded pocket the way Cam does, so he has to run away

2) Wilson got sacked an awful lot early in the season, and still had some later in the year for holding on to the ball too long. Now he gets rid of it quick, or rolls out, goes into scramble drill.

3) Cam and Wilson are two different QB's. Cam's a big, tall, strong guy, who either throws from the pocket, or runs for yardage.

Yes, Newton can roll out, and pass or run. But most of the time, he doesn't have to due to his size.

4) Wilson's more comfortable throwing on the run. And his receivers are better at coming back to the ball, and saving his ass on errant or under thrown balls.

5) You wouldn't get those big pass plays with Ginn, Olsen, or Brown, if Newton didn't stand in the pocket, and wait for his receivers to get open.

All I know is that if Denver somehow - by some miracle - makes this a game in the 4th quarter then CAM is going to will the Panthers to a victory no matter what that takes.

My guess is that  Cam will have an average game with less than 225 yds passing because the domination will be so thorough.

    • Didn't  see this posted (since 2023) but since folks have been posting that you can't judge a draft class for three years (a ridiculous take), I thought I'd post this to see what people thought about the 2023 draft. Unfortunately this may not be the most interesting class to do this with but I do quite like retrospective draft grades. Would appreciate other's takes on this (and other recent) draft classes.   1(1) - Bryce Young QB: I am a bigger Bryce Young apologist than most (maybe all). I like the kid. But there is no way around it: This was a terrible pick. If he had been picked in the 4th or even the 3rd round I would feel pretty good about it. But this was the first overall pick that we gave up two firsts, our best offensive player to get.  GRADE: C -    2(39) - Jonathan Mingo WR: not much to say here here. He was here for two years. His yards per catch are on par with Bryce's yards per pass. Rough stuff. To date he has still never scored a touchdown in the NFL GRADE: F   3(80) - DJ Johnson OLB: a pick I hated as soon as it happened and an example of why the premise of this thread is honestly dumb. This was a bad pick when it happened. Most people knew it.  Then came training camp and he did not look good. Then came the preseason which confirmed what we saw in TC. Then came the season which confirmed what we saw in preseason. To date, he has half a sack in his career. GRADE: F 4 (114) Chandlers Zavala G: Honestly the best pick of this draft which really speaks to how awful this draft is. Other than Bryce, the only pick still on the team. He is mostly average or below average depth which in round 4 is not terrible. But he had a pff score of 43.5 and though I think people have unrealistic expectations for draft picks, I still would want a little more from a fourth round pick GRADE: C+   5 (145) - Jammie Robinson S: I liked the pick when it happened but ended up being a disappointment. He logged 1 tackle with the falcons last year and not enough snaps to get a grade on PFF.  GRADE: F OVERALL DRAFT GRADE: F
