New Offensive Line Coach...Sort Of

The team announced Friday that all of head coach Ron Rivera's assistants have received two-year contract extensions. And that's not all for Ray Brown, who assisted John Matsko on the offensive line the past five years.

Brown's been promoted to offensive line coach and Matsko is now running game coordinator. The changes help the Panthers keep Brown around while allowing the 65-year-old Matsko to continue what he has been doing with one of the best run games in the league.

I hope this doesn't stunt Oher's progress.  He plays well when coached by Matsko.

I don't really think their duties are changing that much. As much as anything it's just about a new title for Matsko and slotting Brown in as his replacement when he retures.

Wtf is a running game coordinator??

It's a very fluid title.  It can mean whatever they want it to.

Basically, I'm pretty sure they wanted to make Ray Brown the official line coach so they don't have to worry about him looking for jobs elsewhere.

Matsko is up there in age (65) and could be looking at retiring soon, just not quite yet.

It varies from team to team, but essentially he helps the OC gameplan the run game and helps the position coaches for the involved players.

This whole "xyz" game coordinator thing is the en vogue thing now. It's like the title inflation in baseball front offices, teams are trying to keep as many good coaches around as possible.  Wilks has the title of passing defense coordinator along with DB coach and AHC. I think the Browns just hired a run and pass game coordinator for their staff and have gone without a traditional OC.
