Panthers free agent possibilities/predictions

With a little over a day until free agency officially starts, let's see if we can "think" like Gettleman. The word "reasonable" is key here. We need to look at 2nd and 3rd tier guys.

I have a feeling Gettleman makes a top 100 free agent list every offseason and then crosses off the first 75 players every time. We are simply not going to overspend. Just look at what the Colts just did with TE Dwayne Allen?!

1) Mike Martin - DT (Titans) - 25 year old pass rushing DT. With the release of Dwan Edwards, we could use a rotational pass rushing DT.

2) Leon Hall - CB (Bengals) - 31 but still playing at a high level. This year's Charles Tillman.

3) Andre Branch - DE (Jaguars) - Former 2nd rounder had underachieved but is young and has some upside.

4) Husain Abdullah - FS (Chiefs) - Can play both safety spots and can compete with Tre Boston for the safety spot opposite another former Chief, Kurt Coleman.

5) Lance Dunbar - RB (Cowboys) - 3rd down scan back than can catch the ball out of the backfield and threaten LB's in space.

6) Darrell Young - FB (Redskins) - Blocking back that can replace Mike Tolbert if Tolbert signs with another team.

Higher-end guys probably out of the price range - Weddle, JPP, Sean Smith, Okung, Iloka, Mario Williams

Guys I could see us looking at/signing - Big Money coming back, Prince Amukamara (meh, injuries), Chris Long, Derrick Shelby, Robert Ayers, Casey Hayward, Anquan Boldin, Brian Quick (who doesn't want another App St. project?)

Amukamara is interesting. I could see him as being a real possibility.

Think more along the lines of Chris Givens or Anquan Boldin at WR.

Oh god no

I have already said it many times if look at the last 4 or 5 SB winners, they all have one thing in common they brought in notable free agents. Its hard win the big one bargain buying in today's NFL

I really want Matt Kalil if the Vikings release him and think he'd be a perfect fit both short and very possibly long term.

ESPN Vikings reporter Ben Goessling reports Minnesota is "very much in" on free agent G/T Kelechi Osemele.

Osemele's market is white-hot after one day of the "legal tampering" period. The Raiders and Vikings seem to be very interested in the versatile soon-to-be 27-year-old, and we'd expect many more teams to be connected to Osemele before Wednesday. In Minnesota, Osemele could be signed to play left tackle where the Vikings can release incumbent LT Matt Kalil and clear $11.096 million. Osemele is fully expected to land $10 million-plus per year this week.

Not sure what you mean by "Bargain Buying" not being successful. Lots of team don't play big in FA and are successful. Our own Gman has shown you over the last 2 years that you can build a team without spending a ton of money.

Gman has never had money. Let's see what he does with it before we decide what he is, or isn't, capable of doing.

He loves him some Hog Mollies. It really wouldn't surprise me if he did bring in a stud DE. It is the one position that really needs an influx of talent this year. Bring in a stud to pair with Ealy. Someone who could also mentor Addison and Delaire. That one signing alone could put this Defense over the top.

I don't expect Gman to go after a Top Shelf FA. But if he does. I would expect it to be at DE.

Still hoping Coples might be a possibility.

Robert Ayers or William Hayes are names I've seen many here mention that seem like they could be possibilities.  I'm definitely focusing on DE as the area DG will bring in a free agent or two....

    • I see progress and improvements. We aren't the same team we were even at the beginning of this year. You want to harp on the past while I am all about the present and future. Do I know thinks are going to be great moving forward? Actually I don't but I prefer to look at the good instead of the bad. Since he is surely going to be the QB the rest of this year barring injury, I am going to root for him to succeed instead of fail. I always said if we are going to finish at 500 for the year I prefer we win at home since I will be there and want to see wins and crying opposing fans like the cowboys. So far mission accomplished. Now we have to show we can win on the road.
    • Yeah and I am doubtful he can offer that consistently. I don’t have many years left at my age and in my view we have wasted two and this whole exercise with him was always a three year minimum.  I am out on that with a guy I don’t believe in, and never believed in, it has sucked. To me it is a costly detour off the right track. Years.    But I am not so rigid that I can’t see excellence. He needs to display it though, consistently before I change my outlook.
    • No, when I said rage, I meant rage, which only applies to certain fans on this board. Your timeline of trying to assess whether he is the future or not is really tied to the discussions surrounding his second contract. If this team is going to commit to some monster contract while he has shown nothing but glimpses of brilliance would be deservedly worrisome, so the clock is genuinely ticking for him to settle into something resembling his final form. Perhaps a best case scenario is that he plays well, the team succeeds, but he does so with a more limited role that makes the rest of the league view him as a game manager, and his second contract value reflects that. Then he continues to improve and becomes a bargain comparatively while not handicapping the team around him, and we enter an era of consistent championship competitiveness that the fanbase has craved for decades and has never really experienced before. But that requires many, many things to go right and for Bryce himself to facilitate that if he ends up being the quarterback of the future.
