Panthers rescind Norman's franchise tag...

I'm not going to read all 42 pages, but I am holding out hope that JNo will still be in Carolina when the season begins...

Maybe this was a message to him that he wasn't really negotiating so much as making demands or talking a big game without actually playing it?

I guess someone could overpay him, but does he love us enough to take less than someone else offers him to come back here. like CJ?

I think it will show something about JNo... Does he want to win and be on a successful team, or does he want to get 1-2 more million dollars on top of several million dollars he will already get? If that is Gettleman's play, I have to say, I like it.

First of all, I take all these "team and league sources" reports with less than a grain of salt.  But if they are true, the first bolded part is BS.  Josh wasn't going to hold out and become a distraction.  He wasn't going to voluntary minicamps, he may not have even gone to training camp, but he wasn't going to hold out into the regular season like Kam Chancellor.  He's said a number of times that when it's time to suit up and play he was going to suit up and play.

The second bolded part, if true, is not negotiating in good faith by Gettleman.  There's no way Norman was ever going to accept significantly less than what that scrub swindled out of NYG.

Not sure how you can say he was not going to hold out and would not become a distraction given that you were not in the negotiations.  Josh could have made it very clear that he had no intention of signing the tag and his demeanor and language could have made it very clear that he was going to be a problem.   I doubt very seriously that DG would have made this move if he thought Josh would not be an issue.

This excerpt from an article about DG's press conference this a.m. is interesting:

Quote

Both Gettleman and head coach Ron Rivera claimed the decision had nothing to do with Norman's intentions to sit out through offseason workouts and potentially through training camp. Instead, they each implied the bigger distraction would be having to deal with constant questions about Norman's status. While that's an understandable concern, the Panthers have one of the smallest media contingents in the NFL.

Even though they wouldn't come right out and admit it, Norman's plans did play a part.

"We want people that are all in," Gettleman said.

There's some wisdom in what G'man & Rivera said, I think - some self-awareness about how they handle media circuses and distractions.

Witness the Greg Hardy mess and our horrible two month losing streak in the heat of that.

Witness the OBJ - JNo mess, all the houha about the bat.... and our loss to Atlanta.

And, I think the media obligations of the SB somehow drained our coaches and team of energy and left them flat on the day of the game, unable to make needed adjustments, thrown off balance my early mistakes that kind of snowballed throughout the game.

Rivera HATES media circuses.  You can just tell....

I'm not saying it's enough of a reason for the decision they took re: Josh.  But I think it is an honest reason.... they really don't want that distraction.  Fair enough.

That ain't a General manager in the NFL that can carry G-man's balls in a wheel borrow!!!

if Hurney has this move on this resume....he would have been blasted.

in the end, you can't claim it was good or bad until the results come.  Could be brilliant  Could be horrible.   I mean if our offense is on point this year yet opposing #1 WRs torch us all year and we miss the postseason....and Norman balls out.  No one is going to be championing DG

    • A winning record would be nice, but I still have us winning around the 6 to 8 game mark. Realistically we should beat the Jets and Saints, that gets us to 5 wins. After that, we have to face a lot of potential play off teams and our divisional opponents. I think we’ll win 1 or 2 of those games to take us to 6 or 7 wins, perhaps 8 wins if we can spring a further surprise.  Is that enough progress for head coach and QB? I’m not sure, it will depend on performances and output. That said, it’s nice to be back in a position where we are thinking about the play offs.
    • I would tend to agree about not falling into the trap and paying a below average QB, but sometimes situations can “force” a team to pay that QB. For example, if we play ourselves into a 9-8 like record, then what options will we have in the draft? Or do we avoid the draft and trade for or sign someone in free agency?  I’m not convinced by the 2026 QB draft class. There’s some intriguing prospects but no one that really screams “draft me”. I’m not sure we’ve got anyone really that stands out as a trade candidate or free agent signing. So although we might not want to commit a big money contract to Young, him playing well and showing progress might force the team’s hand.
    • Realistically we would be looking at no more than a mid round pick for Dowdle or Chuba. Are we really that desperate for a mid round pick? Not really. I would much prefer us utilise the two RBs in a 1-2 punch similar to how we used D-Will and Stewart. After all, Bryce is not Drew Brees. He won’t throw for 300+ yards and carry the team consistently as a passer. So having a strong running game with a 1-2 punch will be beneficial to him, and it will also be beneficial to the RBs because we can spell them and not overwork them.
