Jaguars not excersing 5th year option on Luke Joeckel

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Jaguars are not picking up the fifth-year option on left tackle Luke Joeckel, whom they drafted with the No. 2 overall pick in 2013, according to a league source.

It wasn't a surprise, given that Joeckel has been at best an average player and the team signed former Pittsburgh Steelers left tackle Kelvin Beachum in free agency and announced that the two would compete to be the starter in 2016.

When the rookie wage scale was created in 2011, it mandated that all first-year players sign four-year deals, but it also included a clause that allows teams to extend the contract for one more season. Since Joeckel was the No. 2 overall pick in 2013, he would be paid the average of the 10 highest left tackle salaries from the previous year.

In 2015, for example, that number was $11.096 million. Joeckel is scheduled to earn $3.296 million in base salary in 2016, so had the Jaguars exercised the fifth-year option Joeckel's 2017 salary would have been between $11 and $12 million.

The Jaguars can still try to negotiate a new contract with Joeckel before his contract expires or they could let him become free agent and then try to sign him to a second contract. They also could let him walk.

Yet another high pick that ended up being very average.

Idk if they let him walkaway but If he signs for the right price could become a good starter with help of Matsko, just look what he did to Remmer & Oher

The Titans didn't want Oher.  Buy low, sell high.  Can't say it's not at least a little intriguing considering he's only 24.  If he was a turdburger and/or had a known vice then no way, but I see no such thing on the surface.

It will be a long time before we're picking high enough to take a guy at OT, ironically, like him.

This is the first player in a long time I'd be willing to take a flyer on, since the upside could be high, with the cost commensurate. I doubt we'll see him in camp though, as I'm sure a lot of more needy teams will throw bags of cash at him to come in and try and start for their team instead. If we do think he'd fit in here, I'd like to see him go for the RT spot, with Williams still being groomed for LT. But, again, I doubt he's even on our radar. But, I could always be wrong too, lol.

I think Williams has a chance to beat Remmers on the right side. As far as Luke Joekel is concerned, I dont think he would be an upgrade over Otah. He will probably get signed somewhere desperate that will pay him big bucks... but if he doesnt stick anywhere, I would be ok with DG bringing him in on a short 'prove myself' contract to compete.

Sometimes it helps a guy to get out of a losing clture and into a winning one.

Probably wont happen though. Otah wasnt terrible last year. He just wasnt great.

To clarify, he is under contract through this year.  NEXT offseason he will be a free agent.  To get him this year and see if we want to keep him going forward and have him as depth immediately, we'd have to give up something, although the cost shouldn't be high.  Them signing Beachum made this likely and this pretty much seals his fate there.  He can be had, period.

PS-his listed cap hit is just over $6 million but I read that another team would likely take on $3+ million in a hypothetical trade.  Not sure how accurate.

If the price is right, sure.

The "price" should be a day 3 pick next year.  GMan didn't want to trade future picks last weekend but for this guy's immediate depth and potential upside I hope he does consider.  We don't have a 7th and there's a big difference between a 4th and 6th, but no prospect outside of the top 100 next year at OT would have this guy's upside, little doubt about that.

One of the MANY "cant miss" OT busts!!

DJ Humphries last season even had public questions if he would ever get it at this level.

This is why most should take media draft personalities and Draft websites with a grain of salt. OTs have become the riskiest postion to take in the draft recently.

Egg fuging zackely. But...but....we need. Who gives a fug if we need a DE or OT. We need to draft the BPA. No way Joekel or Fisher were BPA and they teams got fuged

Bad comparison with DJ.  Joeckel is not only a superior prospect with fewer red flags, but actually has a lot of game experience.  And it's not as if he's been completely terrible, just not worth his draft position, a spot that the Panthers may never pick again in our lifetimes.

Said it many times on here I didn't like him. As did with Eric Fisher and Jake Matthews.

College spread offense is killing these players. They come out being soft. They're being sold as great technicians coming out.

Welcome to the NFL. You're lining across JJ Watt, Robert Quinn, Von Miller, Khalil Mack in week 1.

The Chiefs exercised Fisher's option btw.

I'm just not sure what people are expecting to happen at OT without a move like this (and I also wouldn't give more than a 4th).  Yes there will be many other options but no slam dunks to say the least.  Remember GMan was THE only GM to put a claim in for Jonathan Martin.

    • Seen on the twitters, word is that there will be (at least) 5 teams searching for a new head coach next season Leading contenders seem to surround Cinci, Miami, Ravens... with an occasional oddball of Bills being mentioned.  Good news is it seems Canales doesn't appear to be those conversations now (vs a few weeks ago) Heres a general consensus: 1. Callahan 2. McDaniel 3. Pete Carroll 4. Zac Taylor 5. Glenn 6. Stefanski (shouldn’t get fired) 7. Daboll (might have saved job) 8. Canales depending on how they finish  9. Raheem Morris:  Falcons are the team no one is talking about yet
    • CeeDee Lamb got hurt in week 3. The Cowboys were rolling without him. Not sure what you meant by this. Our defense was the 1st to slow the Cowboys down some. Statistically before the game the Cowboys were ranked in the top 3 of the league.
    • A winning record would be nice, but I still have us winning around the 6 to 8 game mark. Realistically we should beat the Jets and Saints, that gets us to 5 wins. After that, we have to face a lot of potential play off teams and our divisional opponents. I think we’ll win 1 or 2 of those games to take us to 6 or 7 wins, perhaps 8 wins if we can spring a further surprise.  Is that enough progress for head coach and QB? I’m not sure, it will depend on performances and output. That said, it’s nice to be back in a position where we are thinking about the play offs.
