Shaq Thompson, Former Duke QB Involved in Sunday Morning Car Accident

May 23, 2016Bill Voth

Former Duke quarterback Anthony Boone is in a Charlotte hospital after a car accident involving Carolina Panthers linebacker Shaq Thompson.

According to the North Carolina Highway Patrol, the incident occurred Sunday at 7:45 a.m. in Weddington, N.C.

Boone and Thompson, who don't know each other, were driving in the opposite direction on Potter Road when Thompson crossed the centerline. Both drivers tried to swerve, but their cars collided head-on.

Thompson was not injured, but he was cited for driving left of center. According to a police official, alcohol was involved, but it wasn't a factor, so Thompson was below the legal limit.

"Shaq informed us he was involved in a traffic accident and we are in the process of gathering more information," Panthers spokesman Ryan Anderson said.

Boone was transported from the scene and is currently at Carolinas Medical Center. According to WTVD's Mark Armstrong, his injuries are serious, but they do not appear to be life-threatening.

Boone, who's from Weddington, played in 46 games and made 25 starts for the Blue Devils. After he went undrafted last spring, he spent some time with the Detroit Lions and the CFL's Montreal Alouettes.

The biggest concern about all of this is the time of day in which it occured..

Driving around at 7:45 AM with any alcohol in your system is a red flag.  Glad it wasnt more serious and that Shaq is fine.

He is still a kid.  He did something everyone does, so I'm not gonna put a label on him.. but you dont like to hear about this kind of stuff.  TD needs to give him a stern talking to..

I smell commissioners exempt list

Probably means he had a little left in his system from Saturday night. If we was below the legal limit, it shouldn't be an issue. This is unfortunate.

If alcohol wasn't a factor, why do they even mention it being involved?

Because it's controversial and grabs the reader's attention and changes the scope of the report whether intentional or not. And because he's black lol, kidding, sort of....

Alcohol left in the system from saturday night most likely and a Sunday morning drive home. Actually, driving home on Sunday morning is much better than driving home drunk on the Saturday night.

The accident could have been a result of texting or phone use, imo.

    • Yeah they were bad QBs - but QB's that stayed on their teams for several years.  BY is better than all of those.
    • This is the right move even if you think Bryce isn't the future. Everything except signing him to a long term deal until proven otherwise. There's a decent chance we have a shot to draft a QB next year that we like.
    • If we're still bad enough that Canales gets fired, especially if it's during the season, there is no way we could ever attract any HC worthy of the job if we told them they had to keep Bryce their first year. That would be 2 coaches he's gotten fired and 4 years of not performing up to par. I still say replace both of them next offseason.  I like Canales the man and I think he's done an absolutely outstanding job at fixing our locker room issues, as it was really bad before he showed up.  But I just don't see it from him with his in game decision making, I think he's held us back just as much as Bryce has, just in different ways. Canales was our Dan Campbell, the coach you hire to turn the franchises culture around for the HC after them to inherit and take to the next level.   The difference was he had some elite coordinators early on and really let him focus on his "leader of men" role as opposed to the X's and O's that Canales does himself and it's turned out well for him.
