Panthers History with 4th Rounders

Any draft pick is a crapshoot.  And the later in the draft the pick occurs, the odds of the pick not lasting increase.  Of course, the risk decreases.

My only concern is the guys age.  If he punts well for us for 4 plus years, then its a great move.  If he doesn't, well, I hope we get at least a couple of years of service out of him.

Would you consider Lee in those handful? Cause statically he's pretty much middle of the road in all regards.

Fact is outside of Lechler in the mid 2000 their hasn't been a consistent dominant punter. Every year theirs a new punter leading in net, average or inside the 20.

If you look at his stats, his average punt length over the last three years has only dropped slightly, but he was still in the top 10 last year if memory serves.  But his net average has dropped over the last three years, although its still better than what we had before.  How much of that is because of spending the last two years on bad teams, or a drop because of age.  Hopefully, its the former.

Ah yes, the Wreck of the Edmund Kugbila. I remember thinking we found a gem here, but he was nothing but a colossal bust.

Not so sure a guy who never could get healthy enough to play could fairly be called a "bust".

More like a never-was.

Over the last two years he's pretty much been floating around 15-17 in all major punting stats.

Being on a bad team for a punter doesn't really matter, like I mentioned above Shane Lechler the best punter of our gen was on the horrible raiders all those years.

His punting average was top 10 in the league.  But his net was middle of the league, in large part because Cleveland gave up a lot of punt return yards. So did they give up a lot of  yards because he outkicked his coverage, or because they were just bad at covering punts.  Hopefully, its the latter, but we will see.

Don't agree that it doesn't matter if  one is on a bad team.  While Lechler may have been the best, he may be an exception, and not the standard.  Of course, it could be argued that if a punter is on a team that spends a lot of time on its on side of the field, his average will be higher because he doesn't have to worry about pinning inside the 20, so it could work both ways.

Average and net go and in hand, if punter angles the punt wrong it can leave the punt team in a bad situation. You can also take into account how much hang time he puts on the ball.

He was 10th in average, 15th in net, 18th in punts inside the 20. Middle of the road

The top 3 punters from last year all played sub .500 teams, so yeah. Being on a bad teams makes absolutely no difference to a punter.

    • A winning record would be nice, but I still have us winning around the 6 to 8 game mark. Realistically we should beat the Jets and Saints, that gets us to 5 wins. After that, we have to face a lot of potential play off teams and our divisional opponents. I think we’ll win 1 or 2 of those games to take us to 6 or 7 wins, perhaps 8 wins if we can spring a further surprise.  Is that enough progress for head coach and QB? I’m not sure, it will depend on performances and output. That said, it’s nice to be back in a position where we are thinking about the play offs.
    • I would tend to agree about not falling into the trap and paying a below average QB, but sometimes situations can “force” a team to pay that QB. For example, if we play ourselves into a 9-8 like record, then what options will we have in the draft? Or do we avoid the draft and trade for or sign someone in free agency?  I’m not convinced by the 2026 QB draft class. There’s some intriguing prospects but no one that really screams “draft me”. I’m not sure we’ve got anyone really that stands out as a trade candidate or free agent signing. So although we might not want to commit a big money contract to Young, him playing well and showing progress might force the team’s hand.
    • Realistically we would be looking at no more than a mid round pick for Dowdle or Chuba. Are we really that desperate for a mid round pick? Not really. I would much prefer us utilise the two RBs in a 1-2 punch similar to how we used D-Will and Stewart. After all, Bryce is not Drew Brees. He won’t throw for 300+ yards and carry the team consistently as a passer. So having a strong running game with a 1-2 punch will be beneficial to him, and it will also be beneficial to the RBs because we can spell them and not overwork them.
