ESPN predictions for NFC South

Who will win the NFC South?

Bowen: Panthers. Opposing teams still won't have an answer for Cam Newton, and the Panthers' defensive front-seven will continue to create chaos in the South. It's the Panthers -- again.

Clayton: Panthers. The Falcons might be the Panthers' biggest challengers, but Carolina has the best roster. Plus, Newton continues to grow as the best young quarterback in the league.

Sando: Panthers. The NFC South is stacked at QB with Jameis Winston's emergence, but Carolina is the only team from the division with a defense worth trusting.

Schatz: Panthers. Their defense will not be as good as it was last year, but it will be far superior to the other three defenses in the division. Plus, there's Cam Newton.

Yates: Panthers. I think there's a decent chance that Carolina regresses by two or three wins this season, but the Panthers are still a superior overall team to last year's Super Bowl runner-up squad. This roster is loaded.

I especially liked what Yates said.

Can't argue with their predictions much. Rivera and Gettleman have righted the ship and built something to last. Atlanta's just sank, the Bucs are rebuilding (but doing it well finally) and the Saints are being dragged down to Davy Jones' locker by the huge contracts they paid out to get to the top.

Unless Tampa really makes a big leap forward, I'd think we've got a couple more years ahead of us without a real division challenger.

    • There is a Grand Canyon-sized chasm between your opinion and the opinions of most former player hockey guys who do this for a living.
    • I can only imagine the **** eating grins on the committee right now. "Oh, Bama didn't deserve it? Oh, Miami didn't deserve it? Suck it, haters!" lol
    • To say that, is gaslighting, because it isn’t true. I mean, maybe one or two people do that but it isn’t the predominant behavior. Even Frank has given him credit. I think particularly the Rams game. A couple of glowing posts.   I know I have. Gotta be honest about it because if you aren’t it undermines what else you say.  But the degree of how far I go with credit, in terms of it being a projection of future performance? Not very far. Acknowledge it, but require more of it. There is a lot of bad play to offset.    I tried to remain passive while the last 9 games (post ankle injury) played out. It is just really hard when the lows won’t go away. I failed. As high as a couple of those highs were, there isn’t enough.    I know it is premature to just say I want to move on, made my decision after 6 of those games ended up pretty much really good or not good enough, but I have had enough of being patient and letting him show the reality either way.  So in my view, he Could still validate himself to a decent degree if he smokes the last three starts. But also in my view I don’t expect to see it. Maybe one more high quality start, would be my expectation. So yes he could still somehow justify having the job next year. If that happened I still wouldn’t have much faith given the last three years and all that has transpired. Again, there is a lot of bad play to offset.
