Was anybody else as impressed with Vernon Butler as I was last night?

That was a great play. The rest was pretty bad. Story of the whole DL really though. A few of them had one good play and the rest was a bunch of garbage.

I hate to sound overly negative after just one game into the season, but I think our entire D-Line is overrated.  Last year we struggled getting pressure off of the edges and it looks like we're gonna have the same problem this year.  I love Charles Johnson, but he isn't the same player he use to be.  I think Ealy is more suited to play LDE.  He doesn't seem to be as effective going up against the LT as he does when playing against the RT's.

KK is the only proven pass rusher from the interior. I think Butler is going to be good, but he just starting his career so we can expect struggles this season. Starr is good against the run but I think he has like 5 career sacks. I'm not impressed with any of our backups as pass rushers (I sincerely hope I'm proven wrong). If we didn't have Luke and Thomas D. I think we'd be an average defense at best.

Last night was definitely concerning. That was not a good OL we went against. Average at best and they were destroying us all night with the exception of a couple plays. I think people really underestimated how much our secondary helped out the DL last year, particularly Josh. Bradberry having to play off coverage gave Siemian a quick outlet on every play. Norman never played off so a WR would have to work to get open and at least an extra half second for the DL to rush. Everyone was way too quick to jump on the Norman and the secondary are only good because of the DL when the secondary probably played just as big a role in the DL being good as the reverse.

Last night the only statistic Kony Ealy had in the box score was a tipped pass. It's early in the season, but he's going to have to start making a consistent impact in the passing game this year if the defense is going to be in the top 10.  Charles Johnson is only signed for a year and he's on the backside of his career. With no true edge threat KK will be double teamed on every passing play and QB's are going to have all day to throw. And, like someone brought out earlier, We don't have Norman anymore to practically take away one side of the field. It's going to take time for Bradbury and Worley to mature at their CB positions. Our most reliable DB is Bene.

I'm hoping big Vern will get one on one matchups and mature as a pass rusher. If does it could make things easier for the whole D-Line. If he doesn't we could be in for a long season on the defensive side of the ball.

    • Yes, more recently. The way duke fans act you'd think they'd won five of the last ten or something crazy when they've actually won zero if the last ten. They haven't even even played in a championship ship game in the last decade. Carolina has played in three. For all the elite NBA talent that has come through Durham, duke is in a woeful championship drought. Duke fans used to talk all kinds of poo about how Carolina failed to win titles with Stackhouse/Wallace and Carter/Jamison and honestly they had a point. We should've gotten a title or two out of those teams. But man, duke's current run of elite talent with no titles puts that to shame.
    • LOL, what? No one has said anything close to that.
    • In response to mailbag questions about drafting a center from Observer, Zietlow gives this infO  From Alex The Panthers, after all, aren’t going to be as stacked with interior offensive linemen who can be converted into centers as they were last year. Cade Mays is already gone to Detroit. Austin Corbett moved on to Buffalo. Brady Christensen might still come back, but his future is murky too … and he ruptured his Achilles five months ago.   Keylan Rutledge. The guard out of Georgia Tech has received high marks in the pre-draft process, and if he drops to the Panthers at No. 51 somehow, they should take him. He worked at guard and center during the 2026 Senior Bowl.   Jake Slaughter. The 6-foot-5, 303-pound center out of Florida really impressed at the NFL Scouting Combine in February, notably with a 5.1-second 40-yard dash time. He’s a center by trade, and coach Dave Canales likes athletic centers who can get to the second level of the defense. Slaughter is projected to be a third- or fourth-round pick.   Billy Schrauth. Another draft, another Notre Dame draft pick?At least, it’s possible with Schrauth, the 6-foot-5, 310-pound interior offensive lineman and team captain. He spent most of his college career at guard, but reports indicate a transition to center would be easy for him. He’s projected to be a Day 3 pick.
