Where did this guy go?

Ron Rivera's introductory press conference from 2011...

http://www.wralsportsfan.com/panthers/video/8923865/

Watch the video, listen to his answers and examine the persona he projects.

The guy in this press conference talked about being a student Buddy Ryan and wanting to run an aggressive, attacking defense.

He talked about being equally aggressive on offense, and adapting the attack to go after whatever weaknesses they saw in the opposing team.

He came off like a hard-ass, no nonsense coach who wouldn't accept undisciplined play or players giving it any less than their best.

I wanted that guy as our head coach.

But that's not the guy I see coaching the Panthers right now.

What happened to that guy?

Come on Scot, not you too.

I've confessed on here before that Rivera was not my first choice for a head coach (I wanted Mike Zimmer) but I got on board with him after the 2014 turnaround and the 2015 season.

Now my doubts are starting to come back.

I'm not advocating his firing or anything of that sort, but when I remember how he introduced himself, it just doesn't match with the guy that we've seen coaching in the years since.

Watch the video and tell me if you see it.

Your the only voice of reason on this forum. Not you too.

I pointed this out a few years ago. He did like most Americans, put on a show to get the job

See, I don't buy that. I think this is who he really was at the time.

But after slow starts the first few seasons, I wasn't seeing that same guy. He looked like he'd been defanged.

Somewhere along the way I just think he went too far in the direction of being a "players coach".

Buddy Ryan needs competent Corners to run his D.

Or enough of a pass rush to compensate for it.

We were playing backups at some important positions last night - obviously including quarterback - and were still in a position to win the game at the end.

So understand, this is not a reaction to last night's game. This is a long-standing thing with me.

And you can't run an attacking style D with no pass rush and corners playing off 8 yards.

Watching the Super Bowl last year, I too believed we'd have a ferocious D-Line this year.

Kony looked like he'd broken out. CJ looked back to form. Short was going to be a beast. Lotulelei was solid.

Now Star is pretty much the only one living up to those expectations. Neither is Tre Boston at safety.

CJ got old quick, and as much as I hate to say it Thomas Davis has lost a step as well.

I think we could have masked the rookie issue if everyone else still looked like they did last year.

Unfortunately, almost no one does.

    • Just another 1st round QB that never paid off for the team that drafted them or traded for them. It's been like this since the SB began. 36 QBs have now won the SB & only 13 of them have been 1st rounders winning with their original team. Namath 1968, Griese 1972, Bradshaw 1974, McMahon 1985, Simms 1986, Aikman 1992, Elway 1997, Roethlisberger 2005, P.Manning 2006, E.Manning 2007, Rodgers 2010, Flacco 2012, & Mahomes 2019. Only 3 have taken longer than 5 seasons as the starter to win a SB.  4  6  5  4  6  4  15  2  9  4  3  5  2 [the years it takes for these 1st round QBs] 5  1  4  1  3  1  1  2  3  4  [10 of the 36 have won a chip with their 1st team that haven't been drafted in the 1st round. These are the years it took them as a starter] What stands out? Only 2 of these QBs have lost their first championship appearance. Elway took 4 years as a 1st rounder & Hurts took 2 years as a 2nd rounder. Of the 10 non-1st round QBs, 2 are 2nd rounders, 3 are 3rd rounders, 5 are 6th rounders or later. Please stop wasting time on drafting 1st round QBs with such a high failure rate. The remaining 13 QBs are traded or free agent signings. Stafford, Favre, Young, Williams and Dawson are the 5 trades. Peyton Manning & Tom Brady also won for teams as free agents on a short stay as well as being drafted. The lesson here is don't waste your franchise on farming up 1st rounders for the league, and steer clear of trading for a franchise QB. Stick to finding that championship QB by drafting them outside of the 1st round or through free agency.
    • I lost most of the respect I had for Fox in 2010. He should have resigned if he hated the job that much. Instead he stuck for his paycheck and let stuff go to hell.    I burned out on Ron too but my deal breaker issue with him was away from football and after he was gone from the Panthers. He may have been out of his depth but never quit on us.
    • From where they were one year ago to now, pretty incredible. I mean, say what you want about Vrabel he is no Jerrod Mayo.
