Locker Room Panic

As far as players go, the roster this year looks very similar to how it did last year.  The only major difference is that there is no more Josh Norman.  This makes me think that the reason for our woes is not from a talent deficiency.  Gettleman is f*ucked in the head and the coaches have been making questionable calls, but that alone can't cause the collapse that we are experiencing.  I think something has to be wrong in the locker room.  Rumors about some players wanting to sit for the anthem, and Bene's release supposedly being caused my locker room disruption support this idea.  

 

Anyone else agree that a locker room issue has to be the cause for this year? Anyone know any rumors about what could be habbening in the locker room?

I thinkpeople are underestimating the veteran presence we lost. We had some real long time veterans that aren't here anymore. Even if not the most skilled, they're integral to success. 

 

Side note, if players are at odds with each other over anthem choices, they're much weaker mentally than I ever could've imagined.

A team with Ryan Kalil, Greg Olsen, Thomas Davis, and Charles Johnson (not to mention Cam Newton and Luke Kuechly) isn't lacking in "veteran presence".

Losing a guy like Roman Harper was a huge hit, especially when you bring in 3 rookie DB's. He could have helped this young secondary a lot.

ill give you Olsen kalil and Davis. but we don't have a veteran in the secondary. You can claim Coleman from his time in the nfl but he's an average player. Nothing special. Tillman was a fantastic presence with experience and time as a great player. Jared Allen was a great player, eventually HoF. Charles Johnson doesn't come across as any part of a leader.

Honestly I don't think CJ is that great of a leader. That leaves us without true veteran leaders at two areas of concern: secondary and d-line.

the leadership is definitely one thing, but the veteran savvy is maybe bigger. go look at the thread about KK and how Jared Allen created opportunities for him last year. Allen lost his ability to get to the QB, but he played incredibly smart. he shut down plays and froze QBs, allowing others to feast. Harper played strong in the box, he was a mentor to all the DBs, and he knew how to antagonize the other team-- knock balls from their hands, not help people up. he knew how to make the opposition the enemy. that attitude is not there. Tillman played well as the #2, but he taught the team the peanut punch and showed the back-end guys how to be turnover machines.

that is all lost. CJ isn't as savvy as Allen. CJ is a hustle guy, Allen was like a Jordan Gross. basically no one in the DB room played with Harper or Tillman. Coleman is a good guy but he isn't gonna mold the young guys or make the heads up plays the others could do.

A guy like Cotchery was clutch especially on third downs for us last year.. he helped all those guys out on offense. Harper Tillman and Allen played to a good level which elevated the lesser talents of the younger guys like Ealy, Boston and such.. I honestly think most of the squad totally over-performed last year and were dragged along by cams best pro season and these savvy veteran leaders.. take that away and your left with what we have now which is a team lost and in transition..

4 years was invested in Norman and you let an all pro WALK with ZERO in return. 

His skill set perfectly complimented the d line. That made it easier fo the other guys to play their role in the secondary.  So fat boys solution was let lots of guys go and draft a whole new secondary 

Clearly that's failed so far.

      I agree with this and I think it's worth mentioning too that Bryce is not consistent on his placement and especially velocity and that in large part is driven by his footwork. We all know XL doesn't have the best hands and I don't know that he can overcome that. Cam always had the heater that just hit your hands and sank into your grip, where Bryce has some that are harder thrown, some soft. Bryce stepping into a pass looks so much different than that hop throw thing he does. I think XL really needs to hit the jugs machine and start learning how to catch all these different touch passes. TMac and Coker don't have these issues. If XL doesn't get some work in he's going to be out of the league in the next couple of years.

      I think most people like XL from a personal standpoint. I don't think he's stupid either. Although if we are being realistic he is lacking in football IQ at this point in time and it cannot be disputed that he has not taken working on his craft seriously at all times given the body of work on the field. It speaks for itself. I myself have defended him at times given the circumstances of our QB room. But he is now in his third year and 25 years old. We are not in a position as a franchise to go around babying anyone especially first round draft picks. He needs to take his position and his football career seriously or he is going to end up selling used cars somewhere. I hope he realizes this and takes an extended break from social media because that mess certainly isn't going to increase his net worth if he ends up out of the league. And these hanger on types will disappear quick too once that money dries up and it surely will eventually. We'll see how he responds.
