Coach's Film Tuesday - Cardinals at Panthers

Jeremy Igo

Recommended Posts

Each week when NFL Gamepass released the coach's film of the previous game, I like to have a look and see who did well... and who did not so well.

This week should be a bit more positive than weeks before.

As I review, I will post items of note.

Begin....

A look at the Panthers plan against the run. Run blitz on the left, forcing them to try to stop KK Short with one lineman. KK beats his man badly and gets the tackle for loss.

Thomas Davis fumble recovery and touchdown.

Interesting... Kyle Love the nose tackle gets a double. Star the under tackle (usually KK's spot) beats his man forces the fumble. Star needs to be paid. He is the best lineman on the team.

How much? What if it comes down to a decision between Star and KK?

Star FTW! His asking price will likely be reasonable, and he is more key to the line, and perhaps harder to replace.

I think the highest paid NT is around 10M per year. I would rather pay Star 10M per your then pay KK 17M per year. Plus we can use the extra 7M for Norwell.

Daryl Worley sack. Joe P says it was a missed penalty. I am not sure. Looks like he is grabbing the leg which I believe is legal, just not putting helmet or shoulders into leg. I could be wrong.

RULE BOOK

A rushing defender is prohibited from forcibly hitting in the knee area or below a passer who has one or both feet on the
ground, even if the initial contact is above the knee. It is not a foul if the defender is blocked (or fouled) into the passer and
has no opportunity to avoid him.
Notes:
(1) A defender cannot initiate a roll or lunge and forcibly hit the passer in the knee area or below, even if he is being
contacted by another player.
(2) It is not a foul if the defender swipes, wraps, or grabs a passer in the knee area or below in an attempt to tackle him,
provided he does not make forcible contact with the helmet, shoulder, chest, or forearm.

With Star's impact and seeming resurgence last game, a lot of it seems to be how he was used.  It makes me wonder...  has Star had this ability to pressure all these years and simply hasnt gotten the opportunity because he wasnt used as the UT or set up to excel due to scheme?

Definitely makes it a tough deciwion about who gets paid and how much, moving forward.  Star was absolutely wrecking shop Sunday.

Cam Newton sack.

Fozzy Whitaker wide open in the flat for a big gainer. Cam doesn't see it. Lots of pressure coming from the right. Missed opportunity.

Don't really see this as a big gainer and definitely nowhere close to a first down. I think this was like 3rd and forever. Fozzy maybe gets 5-7 yards.

    • These arguments are getting more and more disingenuous from both the pro and anti Bryce crowd. Bryce looked very good for stretches down the final 8 games. He finally showed glimpses of the guy that was projected as a top QB pick in the draft. Bryce also didn't look like a top 10 NFL QB.  I think we are so far removed from Prime Cam that we forget what an elite QB looks like. I could tell that when people were losing their minds and simping for Sam Darnold. This season needs to finally showcase Bryce as a franchise talent. If that doesn't happen, it's time to pivot. There are very few recent examples of QB's struggling or being a mixed bag through the first three seasons of starting and then suddenly becoming frachise caliber players.
    • See that's the thing what I saw in game 2 was so embarrassing id rather they could just forfeit
    • Are you arguing that his height deficiencies and footwork within the pocket have not been a present issue clearly seen on his game tape particularly in the games he struggled in? Because that's simply denying what everyone in this fanbase who have watched the games have seen. It's interesting how hardline BY fans here quickly and effortlessly pivot from whailing about being victimized to becoming the aggressor and hurling out allegations of bias and hatred. And at the end of the day while Bryce Young clearly improved significantly from the first two games of the season the reality of the situation is he still finished 42nd in yards per pass attempt behind Mac Jones and tied with Caleb Williams and 38th in passing yards per game behind the likes of Gardner Minshew Aidan O'Connell Drake Maye and Will Levis. Furthermore it took Bryce Young 23 games to surpass Panthers legend Kyle Allen's 13 games worth of passing yardage in 2019. So if your argument is he became a head and shoulders better passer over the course of the second half of the season the reality is we're still waiting to see that growth this season. And there is nothing controversial or vitriolic about saying so from the mind of a rational observer.
