We haven't had a 1000 yard rusher in 6 going on 7 seasons

It seems fairly obvious we would have had at least 2 years ( 2013 and 2015) with a 1000 yard rushers if we didn't have a qb taking those attempt.  This isn't calculus to figure out.

It's fairly obvious if Ted Ginn could catch he wouldn't have been on his 4th team in 5 years. See what I did there.

Without Cam our running would literally bottom 10 every single season since 2012

1000 yards force feeding him sure, 4.5 ypc is pretty much the cut off between good and average. Stewart is the latter. If we are counting missed games and technicalities than your opening up a smorgasbord of "what if" and "could of"

Stewart can't get outside cause he's 245 pounds, slow and always dealing with nagging injuries.

Running more outside isn't a speed issue.  Issue is there is no block to ride out there. OT get pushed backwards and kill the play.  Stewart has to cut back in or start losing yards.

Our run blocking is almost nonexistent.

Our running blocking is bad, that doesn't mean Stewart is absolved of blame. He's basically a fullback at this point in his career. Almost all his TD are within 5 yards of the goal line, he's among the worst when it comes to runs over 10 yards.

Fact is Cam hasn't had a great running game since 2011. When both Deangelo and Stewart averaged 5 ypc, since then it's been a steady down slope.

how are you going to pop off 10 yarders when there is no run blocking?  He sees contact at the 1 or line and finds 3-4 yarders.  Watch a Dallas game.  Elliot has massive openings.  Stewart is a bruiser but the wheels to do that job still are under him (he would punish people if he had run blocking instead of making 4 out of 0)

Cam's best  OL was 2011.   Yeah, he had Bell....but the rest of the OL was solid and vet savy.  Bell just couldn't pass block worth a lick.

I have long argued the best overall offensive team that we ever put around Cam was his rookie season.   Never matched that again (and it wasn't a super squad)

By having better burst. If I'm not mistaken Fozzy (counting the penalties) has more 10 yard runs this season than Stew . And Stewart has 100 more carries.

well Fozzy definitely has better burst but we don't really use them in comparable situations and runs.   I mean if we ran Fozzy into trashpiles for a game his ypc would be worse than Stews.

I just think Stew is still good given what he is asked to do.  Now if by some miracle from the heavens above the blocking gave him a HUGE hole and daylight to split a defense....he can't hit the homerun.  So a potential 50 yard TD that a playcall opens up would only be a likely a 25 yarder.....I agree with that.   But that doesn't happen.  Jerome Bettis couldn't of pulled that off either for huge chunks of his still productive window.  All RBs aren't created equal.

Isn't it sort of alarming when you're backup had more 10 yard runs in way less carries? And we did use Fozzy in some inside runs this season. The big difference is he's able to out run linebackers, Stewart can't. His lateral speed is almost non existent.

    • I think his stats will depend on the development of the rookies and sophomore receivers, which isn't totally under is control. The eye test is a different story. Has to consistently look the part before you decide to pay him Purdy money.
    • Interestingly I think we have kind of of gone through this as an organization. Richardson implemented an FO driven tank. Bad roster, no cash spent, coach uninterested. It may have been for different reasons but I think the results were the same. A team that wasn't going to win many if any games. We ended up with the #1 pick. Cam Newton came in and changed the franchise. It worked, but Cam himself pointed to the losing culture in the locker room needing to be changed. It probably took about 2-3 years for that to happen. Tank worked pretty damn well for us. Cam is one of one. Not another like him, everyone can't deliver on his draft status AND change a culture basically on his own.  So as an exercise here are the last 30 #1 picks. If you tanked and got to pick #1 how many of these guys do you think were worth it? Not just good players, but franchise changers. Guys who will take your culture and shift it so the tank was actually worth it. I would say maybe 9 or 10 guys would be worth a tank, pending the last 5 picks?    2025: Cam Ward (Miami (FL)) - Tennessee Titans 2024: Caleb Williams (USC) – Chicago Bears 2023: Bryce Young (Alabama) – Carolina Panthers 2022: Travon Walker (Georgia) – Jacksonville Jaguars 2021: Trevor Lawrence (Clemson) – Jacksonville Jaguars 2020: Joe Burrow (LSU) – Cincinnati Bengals 2019: Kyler Murray (Oklahoma) – Arizona Cardinals 2018: Baker Mayfield (Oklahoma) – Cleveland Browns 2017: Myles Garrett (Texas A&M) – Cleveland Browns 2016: Jared Goff (California) – Los Angeles Rams 2015: Jameis Winston (Florida State) – Tampa Bay Buccaneers 2014: Jadeveon Clowney (South Carolina) – Houston Texans 2013: Eric Fisher (Central Michigan) – Kansas City Chiefs 2012: Andrew Luck (Stanford) – Indianapolis Colts 2011: Cam Newton (Auburn) – Carolina Panthers 2010: Sam Bradford (Oklahoma) – St. Louis Rams 2009: Matthew Stafford (Georgia) – Detroit Lions 2008: Jake Long (Michigan) – Miami Dolphins 2007: JaMarcus Russell (LSU) – Oakland Raiders 2006: Mario Williams (North Carolina State) – Houston Texans 2005: Alex Smith (Utah) – San Francisco 49ers 2004: Eli Manning (Mississippi) – San Diego Chargers 2003: Carson Palmer (USC) – Cincinnati Bengals 2002: David Carr (Fresno State) – Houston Texans 2001: Michael Vick (Virginia Tech) – Atlanta Falcons 2000: Courtney Brown (Penn State) – Cleveland Browns 1999: Tim Couch (Kentucky) – Cleveland Browns 1998: Peyton Manning (Tennessee) – Indianapolis Colts 1997: Orlando Pace (Ohio State) – St. Louis Rams 1996: Keyshawn Johnson (USC) – New York Jets 1995: Ki-Jana Carter (Penn State) – Cincinnati Bengals
