Saw this article on The Ringer. Talks about the similarities between the Cardinals and Panthers seasons.

There are a lot of reasons for the failures this season and I'm not going to get into who's fault I think it is. The interesting thing I think is worth discussing is the comparison between the two teams. I am curious about whether the Gettleman haters would prefer to be the Cards or the Panthers right now? Each team is going to miss the playoffs, one team has over $50m in cap room and one team has the 2nd least in the league. Oh, and one has a 36-year-old QB, on the last year of his deal and the other has the reigning MVP on a team friendly deal for multiple years.

Rather than take on money, Gettleman continued to purge his roster of high-priced talent, starting with Norman. The Panthers will have about $50.6 million in cap space in 2017, and their list of pending free agents — defensive end Charles Johnson, Remmers, and defensive tackle Kawann Short — isn’t daunting. Short will be the franchise’s priority, and like it often does, Carolina has a contingency plan if negotiations go south. Over the past two seasons, Short has proven that he deserves mention alongside the best interior players in football; if the Panthers balk at paying him a figure that approaches Ndamukong Suh and Fletcher Cox levels, though, 2016 first-round draft pick Vernon Butler is waiting in the wings.


For the most part, Carolina’s defense should remain intact, and given how it played in recent weeks when Kuechly was healthy, that would position the Panthers well moving forward. Unlike last offseason, Gettleman’s work in 2017 will likely focus on offense. After electing not to address the line in the past two drafts, this may be the time for Carolina to use one of its early selections on a tackle.


Even if it doesn’t, the good news for Carolina is that a lack of onerous contracts (and Newton’s palatable $20.2 million salary) leaves the roster with plenty of flexibility both this offseason and beyond. The same can’t be said about Arizona. The Cardinals made their big bet on 2016, and there’s a chance that this was their last shot.

I totally agree that this year has been miserable and disappointing and I agree that much of that is due to personal decisions that didn't work out. But in contrast to the Cardinals I don't think there is much we need to do to re-tool and come back just as good as we were last year and I believe that is because of the approach Dave has taken to this point. Yes, it is time to see the plan come to fruition in terms of the sustained success we have been promised, but I think overall we are in a great position to start becoming an NFL powerhouse.

After the moves they made this offseason they were odds on favourite to make the Superbowl this season so while many on this board myself included) believe that to be true it is not the common held opinion.

Cards problem is coaching and we love to bash Shula and Rivera but they are just better than the Cards.

that's not a roster management issue

It was just a perfect sh!t storm this season. Just the opposite of last year. A ying and yang and the yang hasn't been as fun. But after enlightenment, nirvana.

Yeah and CNN told us It was in the bag for  Hillary... the difference between real and theoretical...

I agree. In the Cardinals case Chandler Jones has all the leverage, they lack cap space so the tag would hurt them, and he has played well so  they almost have no choice but to pay him.
