Why the hell did we draft Shaq?

People do not get it.

The argument for bringing in Gettleman was to build a consistent winning team by drafting the talent and signing free agents to fill out the roster with the gems found in undrafted/project players.

There is no consistent winning team. There has been a major problem filling out the roster with capable draft picks. The Panthers have been unable to land key free agents with the money they have available under the cap. There has been one gem found in 4 years as an undrafted player/project - Norwell.

Now, there seems to be an acceptance for mediocrity at every level of the team because a group of fans love Gettleman. The man who does not believe windows exist, and there should be a push to win now with Cam and Luke. Apparently, he believes they are never going to wear out or get injured. Windows exist in professional sports, and you must be able to see them and move on them quickly.

If you have a cap strapped year because you made a run at a SB, you run the risk of a losing season. If you choose save money by letting key players walk and loading up on rookies, then you will not make a push for the SB and run the risk of a losing season. Seems like Gettleman goes with the lose-lose proposition.

Gettleman needs to start taking care of the core 12 players on the team instead of holding back from paying them and overpaying for mediocre players to fill out the roster.

Maybe he will shock us and spend money on KK and some key free agents this off season while drafting 8 or more players. History tells us he will not do that, but we will see.

If Gettleman believes Butler, Ealy, Bradberry, Worley, Boston, Coleman, McClain, T.Williams, and Addison are the future of the defense, then we are in for several long seasons of pain.

As for Shaq, I see him making plays. They need to get him on the field more. If that means playing him as SS in 4 and 5 WR sets instead of McClain or Boston, then I am all for it. I know Shaq is better in coverage than Klein or Mayo. No reason Klein or Mayo should be on the field in a passing situation if Shaq is available to pair with TD.

i actually generally agree with this post. i know gettleman has skills as a GM and as a talent evaluator, and i'm hoping he just got cocky as hell this year and will come to terms with it. hopefully the no bullshit guy won't bullshit himself.

So the Butler pick was based of "if's"? So what if they resign Short? And since when does an NFL team need two high caliber DT?

Keep in mind the games which Shaq got the most snap Falcons and Saints our defense got lit up like a Christmas tree.

We play in the most pass heavy division in the NFL and instead of drafting secondary help or a pass rusher we drafted  a LB who barely plays and a DT.

We run a 4-3 unlike most teams.  We need 2 legit DTs.  Butler could turn out to be a nice pass rusher too.  Notice that beast DE from ole miss that got drafted by AZ isnt doing poo either.

No defense on shaq.  Always thought it was a bad pick

No we don't. Seahawks run a 4-3 I don't have a damn clue whose one of there DT much less the other one. DT is not a premier position in the NFL.

You do have a point there. They have a monster secondary and legit DE's. Mebane was good idk if hes still there

Not every player is drafted to start immediately. TD can't keep playing until he's 80.

Dang!  I agree! TD is great, BUT can't play forever, like you said. Who would have thought he would still be playing now with the injuries he has had.

Shaq will be well seasoned and ready when the time arrives!!!

I wasn't ecstatic over the pick when it happened.

As others have said it felt like a situational pick which was odd for a first rounder.  Personally I think he is a really good player but he just doesn't have the snap count that other positions would.

It would be interesting to know who all was in favor of him as the pick among the coaches and front office.  Drafting a player for limited packages in the first round feels a bit like "one player away mentality".

Also I really don't buy the replacement for TD argument.  They gave TD an extension.  By the time he replaces TD it will be time to pay him.

With that being said I'm sure there are plenty of other players around that draft range that have done worse.  If I remember correctly a lot of people around here wanted Phillip Dorsett or Jake Fisher.  I don't think Dorsetts numbers are any better then Ginn and if I'm not mistaken Fisher is a backup in Cincinnati.

As a side note I still think that by picking Shaq in the first round that caused us to chase needs with our next two picks and to trade away a lot of our draft picks, but that is a topic for another thread.

Dorsett has done decent in his limited snap plus he's always injured. Landon Collin on the other hand.....

I wont say all that cause they help in the run game, but like I said before, if you want to build a D through the draft you need to run a 3-4 because that's where these DE's and OLB's are going to and Gettleman knows this, which is why he's trying to draft pass rushing DT's

The Panthers honestly have always been behind on times and thats one of the things I do blame JR for on

3-4 Defensive ends in the NFL almost  always played DT in a 4-3 in college unless they came from a few of the programs like Alabama that run 3-4.  Many of their DE go on to play DT in the NFL.

A 3-4 DE is basically a DT.
