Gman: ...we're going to attack the issue [of LT]

top dawg

Attacking it at this point would be drafting a guy we think can eventually fill the need and getting another vet to back up Oher.

There is little to spend on in FA and no big winners early in draft.  We have to be realistic.  Clicking our heels and chanting Left Tackle is a long shot.

But, I am pulling for him for sure

The only way I see us addressing the LT position long term is through the draft and it will have to be on day two or three. Franchise LTs don't get released, they are locked up forever and ever.

I think the biggest thing that can help our line is to get healthy first. We had backups in 4 of the 5 line positions for the majority of the season. I know people want to give Gettleman crap for not doing more, but it's hard to foresee having to go to 3rd string RT, 3rd string Center, and 3rd string RG while with a backup LT like we had at multiple times this season.

So the offensive line looked bad, but I mean, what did some people expect? We had the backups to backups out there due to injury.

Finding a project LT in the mid to late rounds/UFA is a must in my opinion, as is finding a legit backup option like Kalil or Joeckel. So in my dream scenario, he does both.

What else you got? Legit LT's are like white unicorns right now. Give me names

I don't love but honestly I don't mind Kalil as long as it's supplemented by an additional player since his injuries and bad play aren't just a one or even two year thing.

Trade or cap cut possibilities-Staley/Thomas/Peters/Brandon Albert/Veldheer(Humphries) as both are LT's only/Okung

FA-Whitworth

Draft-Ramczyk(?) can't rule him out if there's no QB taken in the top 7 with our favorites gone or in a trade back scenario.  It's also possible GMan doesn't see him as a reach.  Wouldn't love but would understand.

Riley is decent, but look at the market, he will be overpaid. If it's reasonable I'd like him. I'd just prefer Kalil at cut rate.

The market will dictate that everyone will be paid more than they are worth

It would be a reach for Ramczyk or Robinson they both have ? We have the opportunity to draft a blue chip bonafide playmaker at 8. The Thomas /Stanley scenario is a pipe dream. That poo is not happening.

    • I do think the rating is fair given how this unit hasn’t proven it with production. I understand you have to rank off production, not potential. However, our unit is also in a position to make this rating look foolish a year from now. We have 4 guys in the WR/TE room who all could legitimately take the next step this year, and catapult our rank. A guy under a lot of people’s radar after we took Tet, Jalen Coker. Mark my words, he will become the star of this room, and be the heir to Thielen.
    • Exactly. You’d think 2-7 wins a year (in a 17 game season no less) since 2017 is going to keep us bottom tier. Every year we say the same poo like we haven’t been a bad team the past 7 years. Until we prove we aren’t a bottom dweller, that’s where we’ll stay ranked. God forbid we have OL injuries like 2016.
    • What I love and hate about this team is it’s more filled with potential breakout players than ever before. JT, XL, Coker, Smith-Wade, Ikem, Trevin… and even Bryce are all guys I could legitimately see taking the next step. But the problem with having so many of those guys is that team success somewhat relies on them taking that step, and some are bound not to. That being said, I’m cautiously optimistic given our softer schedule, the way the offense clicked late last year, and the direction we finally have at GM, coach, and QB. Could see us as a sneaky playoff team.
