Even Cam Newton can appreciate memes about his fashion style

AP  Feb 1, 2017 at 2:59p ET

LOS ANGELES (AP) Go ahead, laugh about Cam Newton’s sometimes outrageous outfits. The NFL star can laugh about it, and even enjoys some of the online memes have made him the butt of their jokes.

”Some of them are funny. But it is what it is. You’ve got to be lighthearted about it. You can’t take it personal,” the Carolina Panthers quarterback said in a recent interview. ”You to have to deal with certain things. And a meme is one of them. Fortunately and unfortunately. Look at Michael Jordan. He has one of the most popular memes of them all – but I don’t think he’s crying in the corner somewhere.”

The 27-year-old Carolina Panthers star spoke on the set of a Buick commercial set to air during the first quarter of the Super Bowl. He was filming alongside a pee-wee football team in Los Angeles outside a museum with supermodel Miranda Kerr.

Newton’s extravagant outfits at post-game press conferences drew plenty of notice from social media, with memes going viral. Newton said he’d been most impressed two memes in particular last season.

”There was one of them with the parent-teacher conference – `This is how your mom enters the PTA meeting.’ Also like a Batman connotation – when it was like `Batman has until 9 o’clock to show his face or a person is going to die,’ with the pink one. It’s cool,” he said.

Newton said he developed his unique sense of fashion in church, through the junior ROTC program, and from the way he was disciplined as a youngster in Atlanta.

”I grew up in the church and I’ve always had the fashion eye, so to speak, to know how to wear your clothes, have a belt, socks, no socks, whatever. Ironing your clothes is important,” he said. ”And I have to credit JROTC for being able to – how to tie ties. But as far as me, I had a lot of energy growing up, so for my punishment, it was to not have the luxury of wearing dress-down clothes, so to speak – like sweat pants, jeans, or whatnot. I started having to be disciplined by just wearing church clothes. And it started out as something that I was ashamed about. And then I just got used to it and embraced it.”

Be honest with us truth juice, is your first name Kia?

Haha I kind of thought the same.

As far as Cam's fashion; I poke fun at it at times, but really he's a sharp dresser; especially when he's wearing a suit. Now there's some things he wears that I wouldn't, but there's some things he wears that I would try. I can't do the real tight jeans though. I tried it lol.

I bought my dad a pair of skinny jeans and he's 50 something and I kept bothering him about wearing them so he reluctantly wears them every once in a while so I'll shut up about it he looks like a hip old man in them I'm going to buy him more [emoji48][emoji48][emoji48][emoji48][emoji48] ALOT MORE [emoji83][emoji24][emoji24][emoji24][emoji24]

Last year I was at a Mother's Finest concert (if you are young, Mother's Finest is a funk rock group from Atlanta whose heyday was the 1970's-80's) and I saw this African-American gentleman at the concert (both of us of an age) that was wearing a very interesting outfit.  He looked SHARP in those clothes.

And I know for a FACT that if I had worn the same exact outfit I would have looked like I had gone out in my slept-in pajamas.

The lesson of this story is some people can pull it off, some people can't.

Cam Newton?  99.9% of the time, yes, he can.

I couldn't imagine my dad in skinny jeans hahaha.

You're 20 right? I'm 27, and came up when baggy clothes was the in thing. 3XL tall tees, XL throwback jerseys, and baggy red monkey & true religion jeans. Skinny jeans started getting popular my junior year in college. I remember at A&T sophomore year to junior year it went from everyone wearing baggy jeans to skinny. I tried, but I like a lil room if you know what I mean lol.  I do like slim fitting suits though, and now everything I wear fits perfect; not baggy or skinny.

I try to not get them to tight for him they're on the looser side of skinny jeans... they are just tighter than his usual pants.... I like guys who were nice fitting pants cause it just accentuates their butts and I love butts their blessings from above........ HOWEVER I BUY MY DAD THEM BECAUSE I just like the fact that I can nag him about not wearing my gifts and then guilt him into wearing the most ridiculous stuff[emoji23][emoji23][emoji23][emoji23][emoji23][emoji24][emoji48]

Oh my gosh he should win an award for greatest glutes in the league.... I mean his butt is just so amazing like I've never seen a guy with such a great butt. Whenever I get married my husband has got to have a but like him, i mean among other things but a nice butt is very important to me

    • You absolutely can have hope. You can’t convert people though; making advocacy posts are kind of … not reading the room.   I had a small hope that he would be able to at least manage some games and that they could make it work in some kind of no fun to watch fashion.  But honestly I had 100% determined he was not NFL starter material, and I had conviction. So to root for him to marginally succeed goes against the best interest of the Panthers long term, according to my beliefs. I wanted him gone the minute he got here if I am honest. It was up to him to prove otherwise.  He has rarely shown me anything to think I was wrong on his ceiling.  He did show me some courage last year, standing in the pocket and stepping into his throw in the face of pressure - but that has gone somewhere. He made some nice throws last year in places too, but they invested in him on the level of the Atlanta game should be his norm. Good luck seeing that again on Sunday. Still, he did it once, so technically it could happen again.
    • Damn that was a longer post than I intended, Maybe I should have started a new thread.
    • On that TD, he sure didn't get any help from Scott at FS! While we're pointing out Blue Chips...Horn has proven to be a lock-down, (dare I say)elite CB and DB is one of the best at DT. Which brings me to a topic that has unfortunately been much on my mind lately...2026. Our important (IMO) FAs are: Rico Dowdle - As you pointed out, Etienne is developing nicely and Brooks is still untested potential, so not a big loss. Cade Mays and Brady Christensen - I think we can keep both without breaking the bank. BC tested the market this year and it was all but non-existent. He's a solid backup, but backup linemen don't get paid. Mayes is our only starter on the line who's a FA and he's technically not a starter. Corbett is a FA, but good riddance as far as I'm concerned. He stays hurt and can't snap the damn ball when he is healthy. Hunter Renfrow signed a 1 -year prove it deal, and will resign a team friendly deal again I think. He has repeatedly said that he only wants to play here and is Coker's backup anyway. DJ Wonnum - Solid mid-tier guy that I would like back, but is easily replaceable. I will not cry if he walks. Every other FA is bottom of the barrel roster fillers. As it stands now, we need (in order); QB, ILB, OL/DL depth, secondary depth. If we resign Mays, OL is in tact again and still pretty darned good. Horne, Jackson, and Smith-Wade are solid starters as are T-mac and Coker. We have some promising young WRs in Tremayne and Horn. I see us trying to get a FA Chain mover and/or resign Renfrow. RB room looks really good. TE is a conundrum, Tremble will never be a great pass catcher and Sanders will never be a great blocker. Evans is starting to show signs of life, but not enough to tell yet. This could be another spot we try to upgrade via free agency, having a proven TE could really help our rookie QB.
