Differences between this offseason and last

Last offseason, to me, seemed really good. We went into the draft with no glaring weeknesses, until we cut Norman.  I would say that our roster had no true area of need at that time (remember that Oher wasn't hurt yet and we still had Norman) Obviously, last season turned out to be crap.

 

What can convince me that this season will be different? We're in a similar situation as a year ago, no glaring weakness going into the draft and hopefully taking BPA before going on another Super Bowl push.  What's different that will make this season a success??

I think somebody got onto Gettleman about not resting during the offseason and bringing in talent this year

Actually, we did have holes. Remember Norman and the fact he was our only corner, and the rest are ancient off-the-couch mercenaries?

So we came into the draft to fix that need. Not an ideal situation at all for Gettleman.

This offseason, we've cleared off all our main holes with solid veterans/role players. We even replaced the loss of Ginn and Brown yesterday with CJ2 and Shepard.

We go into the draft for BPA. Likely finding a RB in this deep class, and double dipping at DE for our future. Getting a 2nd TE and SS is also likely.

As far as priorities to get, we're likely to get one stud DE and RB early, and a TE later in this deep draft. SS will probably be grabbed as well for potential, and we could probably work and try to acquire more draft picks.

Either way, the future of the franchise looks good. We're in prime position to nail and cement our status as a future dynasty at this rate.

This season will be better because our secondary will be more experienced and talented and our offensive line should be able to protect Cam better.

Yeah, if our OL can stay healthy we should be better by default. Secondary gaining experience and Coleman being able to move back to FS should help a lot not to mention signing a real nickelback. Upgraded the DL by essentially swapping Ealy for Peppers. WR would have to be my biggest concern at the moment. I really hope we're not done there.

Boston not starting and not having 2 complete rookies play every down is a major upgrade...plus peppers > ealy

Last offseason I think we got too enamored with our own players and went after depth signings instead of getting guys to compete. For example, we did not bring in a SS to compete for the starting role with Tre Boston and gave him the role after releasing Roman Harper. We did not add a DE in the draft or FA we believed that Kony turned the corner with his Super Bowl performance and thought Rakim Cox, Horton, and Delaire would emerge after another year on the team. Also, how many times did Gettleman mention that we had an "extra first round" pick with Kelvin coming back from injury, so they thought they were set at WR and Philly Brown could take over Cotchery's role as slot WR. Next, Mike Remmers had a horrible performance in the SB but we did not bring in an OT to compete against him  but hoped that Daryl Williams would improve and take the job. Furthermore, we wanted to get a second TE to replace Ed Dickson but we did not land Jared Cook and settled for Beau Sandland and Scot Simonson to step up.

Mike Tolbert was done a year prior but brought him back. Teddy Williams lead all special teams players in penalties, brought him back

Norman's agent was clearly a clown. It was not Gettleman's responsibility to make sure the agent was doing his job. I seriously doubt the rescinding came out of left field and/or that at least the agent had no idea it was an option, and we're all speculating anyway since only Gettleman and the agent know the full story.

I'll accept that Gettleman put the team in a bad position, but not Norman.

Exactly. They chose their negotiating tact and, due to whatever circumstances, failed - in an unprecedented manner - with respect to getting Carolina to meet their demands. 

Tough to say that Norman lost overall though... $75MM seemed to be what he was after all along.
