I think its prudent to NOT count on Oher at any position. Daryl Williams is our starting RT, and we're not sure who will be the backup.

this has to be the approach so we don't get burned again...Oher would just be a plus...

For what it's worth, on the question of continuity, here is what our Oline looked like in 2015 in terms of games active:

Not counting Chandler or Foucault, neither of whom had a single snap, 9 Oline guys played during the 2015 season, and the last half of the year we got by with only 8 on the roster!  We had NO Oline players lost to injuries after game 10 (week 11) when Norwell returned and Amini was sent to the IR.  Pretty shocking.

Among our 5 starters:

Remmers played 19 of 19 games, as did Oher.  Not a SINGLE game missed at OT!

Turner played 19 of 19 games.  Norwell was the only starter to miss a chunk of time with injuries, only playing 16 of 19 games.

Kalil played 18 of 19.

At the time I did not appreciate how incredibly blessed we were with health on our Oline!

In terms of snaps, 2015 looked like this:

58c6f755e55c7_2015Olinesnaps.png.cd673b57e5bd811f5724eaccaca7e40f.png

Including Post-Season stats, 4 of our 5 starters played at least 92% of all possible Offensive snaps.  The 5th, Norwell, still played over 75% of offensive snaps.

(I'd have to think this is pretty abnormally high continuity in the NFL.  It would be interesting to research.  Anyone want to help with this or know some site that may already have these stats?  I know I could find stats at PFR, it would just take time to crunch numbers.  But it would be interesting to look at playoff teams and Oline continuity...)

I'll see if I can do this same analysis for 2016 (it's gonna be DEPRESSING!) and post it here later tonight or early tomorrow a.m....

You don't really take a project LT. You either get the best ones or you don't.

I can agree with the rest of the sentiment, though. I really see any OL draft pick we make being a Tackle that can move to RT or guard, or one of the C's that can move to either G position (Pocic, Elflein, Toth, etc.)

I really like Toth in one of the later rounds.

Project may be a bad word to describe it. From what I'm seeing, pretty much every T in this class needs some type of work. I'm just talking about grabbing one of them to learn behind Matt Kalil. Just like with the C/G.

I like Toth in the later rounds too. Probably more realistic then Elflein too.

2. I think with Larsen's experience, Gino has become expendable. I think he'll give us close to $1,000,000 in space if we release him. If we do, we lose a backup guard in the process. But, if we get a rookie that has flexibility on the line like Pocic or Elflein, then Gradkowski is most likely gone.

$750,000. But yeah, I agree; him, Scott and Silatolu seems like a lot. I think one of the 3 are gone. i would prefer a tackle since it seems to be easier to slide them inside that for a guard to slide out. I know that they seemed big on Rigsbee and Yankey last year in camp, I can't wait to see how they've progresses this summer. Also, do't put it past Dave to double dip and grab some tackle we never heard of in the late rounds.

I had some time tonight to put together a chart of what our Oline looked like game by game in the 2016 season.  It's a pretty big contrast to 2015, as we all of course know.

(click on table to see a larger view)

The percentages above show % of offensive snaps played each game by every player on the Oline, including jumbo packages.

2016's table of O line players was a lot more complicated to do than 2016.

Firstly there were 13 players on the roster at some point, 2 of whom (Wendell & France) never played an offensive snap even though they were active (dressed) for multiple games.   9 different players started.

Additionally,. because so many players were shifting positions, I couldn't just indicate if a player was active or inactive, or look at the total snap count & %.   Starters missed a combined total of 21 games due to injuries.  Oher 13, Kalil 8.  Our primary backups missed a combined total of 9 games.  Gradkowski 6, Daryl Williams 3.  That's a total of 30 games missed by our starters or primary backups on the O line in a 16 game season.  [In 2015 by contrast our starters and primary backups missed a total of 19 games in a 19 game season.  You could almost say the starters and backups missed only 10 games because Silatolu was never replaced after being sent to the IR for 9 games.]

Mike Remmers started all 16 games.  But for 13 of those he was out of position, playing LT., not the same as starting all 16 games at RT! Turner also started all 16 games, but played most or all of 4 games out of position at RT when Daryl Williams was injured..., etc.

For comparison:

In 2015 we had a total of 9 active O line players on the 53 man roster. (Chandler & Foucault were each technically on the roster for 1 game each but never played.)  Only 7 players started.  Among all 5 of our starters, only 4 full games were missed due to injury.  (Kalil 1, Norwell 3) in a 19 game season (including the post season).  Our starters played 93% of all offensive snaps and  always started at their normal positions.
