Is The NFC South The Best And Toughest Division In The NFL Today?

Once upon a time, the NFC South was so weak, a 7-8-1 Panthers team made the playoffs as division winners. 

That doesn't appear to be the case today.

When you consider our division right now, it certainly doesn't look like any real pushover at the moment.

The Carolina Panthers arguably have no holes anywhere, and all they could do is just build up their offense to become deadlier than it's ever been. The Panthers defense is far and away the best in the NFC South, and with solid draft picks (ideally a #2 TE and a new RB), we could be looking at one of the most diverse and deadliest offenses in the league. We also still have Cam Newton, and Kelvin Benjamin should finally be healthy in time for 2017.

The Failcons also have very few holes anywhere, other than RG and a DE. They have one of the league's speediest offenses, and a young defense that's starting to take form. Vic Beasley - although overrated & shut down by Daryl Williams twice - is still becoming something, and they got speed everywhere. They were just in the Superbowl, and likely planning to gunning down for another shot this year. They also have Matty Meltdown who played fine for most of the season to earn league MVP.

The Buccaneers retooled their offense with a speed threat in DeSean Jackson to compliment Mike Evans. They still have a decent running game and Jameis Winston is growing and learning. Their defense is no easy walk in the park either, and they're trending up. They could break out any year at this rate, although their coaching staff may hinder them for a little longer.

The 'Aints are always a threat with Longneck Drew Brees and his skills, and they don't have a pushover defense anymore. With the possibility of acquiring Malcolm Butler, they won't have that bad of a secondary either. Their front will likely feature Fairley and Rankins as their DTs, and Cam Jordan can still be a ruckus. They'll be competitive for sure.

So, again, is the NFC South the best and deadliest division in the NFL today?

Even then I'd still argue the NFC South is better, in the fact our defenses are at the least mediocre to amazing, while all our offenses are good. The AFC West has a terrible Broncos offense, a weakish Raiders defense, a mediocre Chiefs offense, and a flop of a Chargers offense.

I think so because of strength at the most important position on the field- QB. MVP's of the past two regular seasons plus Drew Brees? Add some big time individual players like Julio Jones, Mike Evans, Luke Kuechly, and there are some great match ups. Gotta get the divisional match-ups right to give ourselves a chance this season.

NFC south is the worst defensive division in the NFL by a long shot 

We regularly only put one team in the playoffs.

The only thing the NFC south going for it is its parody

As far as the Panthers are concerned we beat the Chargers and beat ourselves against the Chiefs, Broncos, and Raiders. Could have easily been 4-0 against the Afc west. Don't know about the rest of our division.

Gano missed a FG against the Broncos. Even so, we gave up a lot of points later in the game. That should've been in the bag.

Rivera didn't go for it on 4th down against the Raiders. That game should've been in the bag.

Kelvin Benjamin couldn't reel in a pass against the Chiefs, and Rivera didn't just sit it out until OT even when that game should've been in the bag.

We beat the Chargers.

      He is also a player that has that "lock room cancer" tag.  We don't see much of the full picture, but I try to stay far away from that type of player. He is historically not good at losing, and we tend to do that a good bit. Not a good fit in my opinion.  I respect the skill, though.

      I honestly can't think of a teams first line basically telling the coach to fug off like last night's line of Aho, Jarvis and Svechnikov did to Rod.

      Do you even know what the term "below average" means? Because I'm genuinely not sure if you do. There are 32 QB's in the league, which means to be playing "above average" he'd have to be the 15th best QB at the league, and even then, that's in essence the "average NFL QB" still. Even going by these rankings, which have him 20th, that by itself is the definition of "below average", and that's before you consider there are multiple QB's ranked below him in this list that I'd 100% trade him for in a heartbeat. Again, no matter what you think the eye test tells you, he's made 28 starts and has a grand total of FOUR games over 247 yards.  Drake Maye has made 10 starts, all with a significantly worse group of pass catchers than Bryce has had, and he already has 3 games over that number himself. I don't need to see or know anything else beyond that to determine he is a below average QB in this league so far and I don't know how anyone can honestly argue against that.  If he was a Lamar Jackson type putting up 75+ yards rushing on a consistent basis, then you can look at those passing yards differently, but that's not the case here. Could he still improve and get to average or better?  Of course. But you're trying to extrapolate a few throws/drives/moments from a handful of games and trying to say that makes him even an average, if not above average, QB in this league.  Which is just nonsense when the players you're comparing him to have played at that level for full seasons or their entire careers.
