Warren Sapp Crapping All Over Garrett

Texas A&M defensive end Myles Garrett has been the presumptive No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft for pretty much the entire offseason. Rare is the mock draft that doesn't have Garrett going first overall, and rare is the analyst or scout that doesn't tab him as the best player in the draft.

Hall of Famer Warren Sapp, the former star defensive lineman for the Buccaneers and Raiders, is not a fan, and doesn't understand why Garrett is getting so much hype.

"I don't see it from this kid," Sapp said, per ESPN.com. "I see the splash plays; everybody gets those. Where's the game he took over? Where? Any defensive lineman who's the No. 1 pick, you turn up and you say, 'There it is!' This kid, no, I don't. I'm a pretty plain and frank guy, and I watch the tape and he disappears. I watch the tape, and he absolutely disappears."

Sapp says Garrett is the favorite to be the top pick solely because of his work at the NFL combine. "It's all about measurable," he said. "Once you hit the measurable, it's tough to get them old scout people off the numbers, and that's what [Garrett] has. He's big, and he's fast. Now some defensive line coach is thinking, 'I can turn him into something.' How? I'm trying to figure this out. Really? Are we lowering the bar?"

The last time the Browns had the No. 1 overall pick was back in 2000, and they used it on a defensive end: Courtney Brown of Penn State. Brown went on to play just six NFL seasons (five in Cleveland), totaling 184 tackles and 19 sacks. Sapp apparently thinks taking Garrett would be an even bigger mistake. "I don't think this kid is as good as Courtney Brown either," he said.

As Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio noted, it's somewhat odd that Adam Schefter, who is primarily a breaking news reporter, has written a story that appears to exist solely to communicate Sapp's opinion on the presumptive No. 1 pick. We're not going to speculate as to why he might have done so, but it's worth considering before you take the information at face value. Sapp's opinion notwithstanding, Garrett is still widely expected to come off the board before any other player come Thursday.

Damn he crapped all over Garrett

Sapp also said Strahan didn't belong in the HOF and he got butt hurt every time anyone talked about how good JJ Watt was.  He picks and chooses who he thinks should get notoriety and if you disagree with him you're an idiot.

There's a reason after NFL network fired him that all of the normal day to day staff stated he was unstable and you shouldn't make eye contact with him.

Say what you want about Sapp guys. But, you have to admit he knows a bit about playing defensive line in the NFL. He once had 16 sacks from the DT position and is in the Hall of Fame. I'm sure he can scout potential lineman (especially pass rushers) better than us.

I tend to think Garrett is overrated. I think he will be good eventually, but I doubt he'll be a once in a generation talent or dominate during his first couple of years in the league. Now, if he somehow landed with us he'd have the luxury of learning from established pass rushers (Peppers, Johnson, Addison, Kwann) and wouldn't have to start right away. If he ends up with the Browns, Niners, Bears, Jags, etc I'm expecting him to struggle initially.

    • Possible, he is physical and a forchecker but not a needle mover, but i wouldnt mind it
    • The problem with these summary stats and rankings is that they flatten out progression and assume an even performance throughout the year. His first 3 or 4 games of the season don't really tell you anything about his current level of capacity but more about where he started and what his floor was last year. Given his last several games were against playoff teams, that gives you an idea of his current ability coming into the season. But it will serve more as a floor than a ceiling given the upgrade in talent on offense. And a better defense should give us more stops which results in shorter fields and more opportunities. And going into his third year there is no reason to suspect he will regress. His success wasn't  based on being superhuman but being smart and taking what was the defense was giving him. Distributing to the other guys not trying to do it on his own. He was great at the end when pressured and consistently moved the ball. That makes him a great game manager which is what we need. Something that is easier to do and relies on everyone else rather than having to be a top physical specimen or do it on his own. No one can predict the future but to say we haven't improved much is crazy given just having the Browns anchoring the defensive line will shut down the run and make sure QBs won't be stepping up in the pocket.  Assuming Evero got the message to can the prevent defense and bend until you break philosophy.
    • If the Canes don't bring back Tyson Jost or Jack Roslovic, is Tanner Jeannot an option? https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2025/06/senators-expected-to-show-interest-in-tanner-jeannot.html
