Voth: Proehl didn't really push receivers

I think, in today's NFL, the push these days has to come more from fellow players vs. coaches.

Cam, KB, Funch, Kalil, are all pretty laid back, funny guys...the only skill position player on O that looks and seems serious all the time is Olsen, and maybe Philly to an extent in the past.

There is a fine like there, Olsen is right on it, Smitty often took it too far.

I wouldn't mind seeing Cam up in these guys faces a little more often...but it's not really his style.

I forgot to mention it in the unpopular opinions thread but I've felt that we are lacking vocal leaders on the offense. Then again, that's a perception thing. Aaron Rodgers seems like a good model but there are the reports that he's not the leader we think he is behind the scenes.

Not true. Some guys need tough love like Vernon Davis.

Not sure that's the best example. Singletary got fired and Davis is not on the top of many people's lists for great tight ends. There has been cases where tough love worked but a coach that goes that route will have much better luck in the college level.

Oh, and we do have to keep in mind that wide receivers tend to be primadonas. That can't make a tough love approach any easier.

i had a feeling for years this was the case and also a good reason why we couldn't develop anyone outside of Smitty. I hope the replacement can light a fire under these players.

I was always in the boat that Proehl was the man, and his knowledge would allow our guys to flourish.  We just didn't have enough guys who work well with that.  Proehl could pour a fount of knowledge into guys, but if they didn't bust their butts in practice with his level of precision, it was only partially done.

Hopefully Taylor can be the one to coach them and Cotchery can be the teacher.  Maybe that's a good partnership.

I don't know anything about Taylor, but Cotchery was reported to have been good in the WR room when he was a player.  Hopefully, that will transition well to coaching.
