Curious for the thoughts of more experienced football minds

Since Mccaffrey can play slot WR we will probably only keep 5 WR on the roster. Unless we have some WR impress enough that we wouldn't want to send to the practice squad.

as of right now these are the 5 WR I see making the 53 man roster:

Kelvin Benjamin

Devin Funchess

Curtis Samuel

Russell Sheppard

Charles Johnson

practice squad: Fred Ross

I could possibly see Ross making the roster if he has a good preseason. I also wouldn't count out Johnson being cut and not making the roster but as of right now this is who I predict making the team. Predictions before preseason is kinda pointless because a lot can change, from injuries to player improvements.

People are counting Charles Johnson out but I think he has a good chance. His 40 time at his pro day was clocked at 4.35 and 4.38.

The question is can Fred Ross make the roster? I believe he is a sleeper.

One quesition I have is if we are changing our WR corps completely and going away from using 6-4+ WR and instead using sub 4.40 WR or are we just adding speedy WR to complement our big WR? This offseason we signed WRs Charles Johnson, Kaelin Clay and Russell Sheppard all who are under 6-4 and have speed and some special teams experience. Add the fact we also drafted Samuel and Mccaffrey who can move to WR if needed. So it seems all off-season our plan was to get faster WR.

I get the impression we are getting speedy guys to compliment our big boys, not to transition away from them.

Itll be good for Cam to be able to attack a defense in multiple ways with different types of threats

Best case scenario

1. Kelvin
2. Funchess
3. Samuel
4. Shephard
5. CJ 2
6. Byrd

I like having essentially 4 speed burner receiving options in Samuel , cj , Byrd , and McCaffrey .

I could imagine having McCaffrey in as the rb , with CJ on the left, Benjamin on the right , and Samuel in the slot, Olsen at TE  would be deadly formation.  I could see cam play action to mccaffey in the shotgun and bomb it downfield to CJ  , could hit Olsen or Samuel crossing in the middle , maybe Benji downfield , and the x factor would be cam just dumping it off to McCaffrey with the defense totally distracted by everyone else

Fighting for 5th:

Bersin

Garrett

Byrd

Fighting for 6th:

Ross

C. Johnson

Garrett didn't seem too impressive in rookie camp over the weekend (unlike Byrd last year, who shone).

Byrd will be coming off surgery.  Limits his off-season conditioning & OTA reps...

Ross seemed to really impress in mini-camp.

CJ#2 I don't know enough about really, but he has experience.

So, I'm inclined to drop Garrett much lower.  He may be fighting even for a spot on the PS at this point.

Byrd I think will be fighting for 6th.  We've got a bunch of other speed guys on the roster.

I tend to think the fight for #5 is between CJ#2 & Bersin.  Both give you some size and experience.  Decent depth in case of injury.

I wouldn't call myself an expert but I think I have a feel for the concepts in regards to what didn't work last year and I'd argue I have a feel for what we've done to address the issues.

I'll try to be as concise as possible.  A side from Cam Olsen has been our best offensive player.  Benjamin came in and flashed dominating potential but the acl was a set back.  But when healthy there is a sample size for the type of contributions they can make.

With Funchess.. we liked him enough to move up in the draft.  Then we played him in multiple receiver positions in his first camp as a rookie.  I don't think he not the staff ever got a form grasp on what his role was.  But the youth talent and versatility are real.  Keep the versatility in mind as it will be an important part to how I believe he can blossom in this offense "evolution"

Now for the more exciting part.. the new additions!  When you think of Cotchery and Ted Ginn Jr you can just swap in Shepard and Samuel.  Reliability and play making.  We sorely missed Cotchery as a technician, and when Ginn left to join the saints we lost that pure speed play making ability.  Shepard not only gives you a veteran option as a receiver he can also be a team captain for your special teams.  As for Samuel just read any of the various threads on him here.  Ted Ginn Jr just saw his ex with a hotter guy.  That has to sting.

Now we get to CMC.  And I won't keep you long for this one.  This is where evolution with our offensive philosophy is defined.  If you're curious as to how we plan to employ his talent watch his tape from Stanford.  Not only do we already run most of those plays, we will adapt the ones we don't to the play book.  Guy can do it all and he will likely be the main focal point of the offense imo.

I think we keep 5.  I was gonna full circle back to funch benji and Olsen, but the simple idea is that you can play Kelvin at x and line Olsen and funchess up all over the formation.   You motion McCaffrey and or Samuel to force the defense to show it's hand.  It will be an incredible challenge to game plan against that because we are so multiple with that personnel we can simply rush the los and run the same sets over and over until you call timeout
