Gettleman isn't going anywhere anytime soon. So if Smitty is that petty, then he can go fug himself. He always claims to be the bigger man but he's really not. He allows emotion to get in the way all the time. So be it, Smitty. I'll see you retire as a Panther when you're 50.

Several years ago when Smitty was towards the twilight of his Panther years he was involved in a lot of the Charlotte sports radio stations. I remember him sort of blowing up on me on air.  He's a dick. Was a great player...but a dick.

Just curious, what difference does it make what uniform he's wearing when he retires? Everywhere you look up a player, you see all the teams they played for, it's not like anyone will forget Smitty was a Panther or anything.  He's not getting a statue, isn't on any sort of ring of honor, so what difference does it make?  He's done as a player, that is all.

A one-day ceremony to retire is all about the player grabbing one more step into the limelight; one more day when it's all about him; one more news conference where he's asked to tell how he feels.  Does anyone seriously think Smitty needs that?

I would rather read up on something interesting Samuel or CMC has done in OTAs, to be honest.

I didn't think he'd be all excited about it. Honestly, I don't care if he ever doed, cause it's clearly not in his heart.

We released him and that type of attitude is what made him the player we loved.  If JR called him, I'd be very surprised if Steve told him no.  I hope he retires a Panther soon.

Just because someone doesn't give a s*it about me, doesn't mean I should feel the same. That's one of the world's problems now.

So, because a guy is a millionaire I'm supposed to stop caring about him? With your views, I didn't think you'd feel that way. Take away his money, and he's still a man just like you and I. I can care for the guy that's down bad on his luck at Citgo the same way I can care for Smitty and his situation, despite his millions.

The thing with Smitty is he's an against-all-odds personality.  That fire still burns, and shows up as hubris and pride.  The kicker is, he's holding a grudge for how everything was handled, but it was handled that way BECAUSE of his personality.  When you force someone's hand--especially if that someone is pulling the strings--then you have to expect the repercussions.  In the face of his devil-may-care attitude, he thinks he shouldn't have to face them.  In other words, he's his own worst enemy.  He ignores his roll in the situation and how he contributed to the tough decision.  Here's the thing, players aren't running this thing.  Regardless of what social media presence does or how fandom skyrockets a player to stardom, at the end of the day, they're the PAWNS in the NFL.  Thing is, they don't know it and get rankled when reality bites, and their true place in the pecking order is revealed.  It is what it is.  Know your value.

He doesn't care about Panther fans. He's proved it year after year, statement after statement. So why should I care if he retires a Raven or a Panther?

as I said....minutia,

He's still annoyed by how he was released. He's never stated he doesn't care about Panther fans. You don't have to care, but there's still plenty fans who do care. Issue can be small to you, but it is still worth discussing. He's an all time panther great, and it doesn't matter if you want to discuss it or not.

Always amazes me how the players become the bad guys when they demand more money, feel a certain way about being released, etc but when owners & management do the releasing or make the tough decisions that involves the players, it's "just business" to the fans...

Exactly. Loyalty is a two-way street - and players only get it when they're playing - to paraphrase an old song. Players have a responsibility to their families and themselves to bargain hard and be willing to walk away. What other business makes you persona non grata at 33? Your "owner" is not your friend.

Smitty was a great player who gave everything for us and had to walk away. Things might have been different if a real leader - like Kaepernick, who quietly earns the respect of his teammates and stands up for what's right - was playing under center instead of our current primadonna. We lost the better man.

Was going to pie this until the bolded appeared. I don't agree with that, but the rest is spot on!
