Play Calling in the PreSeason

In 2011 we averaged 279.8 yards per game in preseason.  Cam was 24/57 for 300 yards with 1 TDs and 0 INTs.  He rushed 5 times for 68 yards and 1 TD.

In the regular season opener, Cam was 24/37 for 422 yards, 2TDs, and 1 INT.  He rushed 8 times for 18 yards and another TD.

History says we run the vanilla crap.

I was at that game in Arizona, we were losing most of the time, of course his passing was inflated when he is playing from behind

We were tied 7-7 at the end of the first, up 14-7 at the half, and 21-14 at the end of the third.  But the rest of the time we must have been losing...

You're right, I confused it with the next time we played there, the first game just seemed bad because how it ended. I went to both Arizona games and saw 2 losses, had to go to LA last year and see the most boring game ever to see us win :/

Playcalling in preseason?
I'll let the history of the league answer this question.

I have no doubt we are going to keep a lot under wraps during the practice games. However, if our offense really has evolved then it will be impossible to hide all the changes we have planned. The first time I see Cam hit McCaffrey with a pass in about 1.5 seconds and we actually gain yards I'm going to feel a lot better about the future.

The only prediction I will make is that some fans will foolishly criticize the pre season play calling even though other fans will explain to them that it doesn't mean anything and is nothing like what they will see during the season. You know, Einstein's theory of insanity and all.

It will be very telling when the newbs get their first real in-game bullet pass from Cam. That is how we separate the men from the practice squad.

So true.  It definitely seems to take many of our WRs time to get used to Cam's heat.  So, I'd definitely hope that the preseason games give Cam & our new guys a chance to get on the same page.

Our 2nd game, our 1st home game, will be against the Bills. Coach McDermott knows us so well you can bet he'll be scouring our preseason tape for any little clue he can find. As the Rivera coaching tree grows it will become harder to disguise preseason plays. So I am perfectly fine with hone-the-basic-skills vanilla play calling unless we need to try something.

That's easy.. it's going to be whatever the hell we feel we need to work on the most in a live game situation. If it's the basics and fundamentals, it's gonna be vanilla. If it's a little more complex, we'll do some looks here and there, but nothing too extravagant so we don't show all of our cards at once.

Because, as we all should know by now, it's a glorified scrimmage that means absolutely nothing, outside of seeing how well certain players have developed, and how much they've retained from training as a unit.

    • That's why I said stats aside. I lived in CO during Allen's college career and didn't have kids at the time so I watched most of his games. Bruh, I'm telling you. Balls just spraying all over the place. The type of throws where you're honestly trying to figure out who he was even trying to throw that one too. It was crazy. Richardson was inaccurate in college but at least you could tell who he was trying to throw it too. He threw a lot of early in the game Cam Newton type balls where it seemed like he was just a little too amped up and everything was a few feet high.
    • A lot can change over the next week, but here is my best 53-man roster (note: I'm just basing this on guys on the 90 man roster currently). Obviously there could be trades/ waiver claims/ FA signings.   Offense (25) QB (2): Bryce Young, Andy Dalton RB (3): Chuba Hubbard, Rico Dowdle, Trevor Etienne TE (4): Tommy Tremble, JT Sanders, Mitchell Evans, James Mitchell WR (7): Tetoria McMillan, Xavier Legette, Adam Theilen, Jalen Coker, Hunter Renfrow, Jimmy Horn, Brycen Tremayne  OL (9): Ikem Ekwonu, Damien Lewis, Austin Corbett, Robert Hunt, Taylor Moton, Cade Mays, Chandler Zavala, Brady Christensen, Yosh Nijman    Defense (25) DL (6): Derrick Brown, Bobby Brown, Ashawn Robinson, Tershawn Wharton, Sam Roberts, Cam Jackson OLB (5): DJ Wonnum, Pat Jones, Nic Scourton, Princely Umanmielen, Thomas Incoom  ILB (5): Trevin Wallace, Christian Rozeboom, Krys Barnes, Jon Rattigen, Claudin Cherelus S (4): Trevon Moehrig, Demani Richardson, Lathan Ransom, Nick Scott  CB (5): Jaycee Horn, Mike Jackson, Chau Smith-Wade, Corey Thornton, Shemar Bartholomew    ST (3): LS: JJ Jansen  P: Sam Martin  K: Matthew Wright    Would like to hear everyone's thoughts
    • He was a more accurate passer at 56.2%. That's what I mean. Even by outlier standards, this dude was inaccurate. Closest I can recall to something like that would have been one of those GT QB's like Reggie Ball. Career 48.6% passer.
