Thomas Davis signs contract extension

I'm just spit ballin here.

Looks like TD/reps asked for 8mill and settled for 6.75.

Dave -"I got a very capable young player on a rookie contract, take 4mill or pound sand." TD called JR- "muh feeling, gregs' feelings are hurt too, saif saif " .

What about the Lawrence Timmons deal? The team overpaid...

IMG_2546.PNG

Let's look at that. Timmins gets a  2 year contract for 12 million with 11 million guranteed.  Davis signs a 1 year extension for 6.75 million which just guarantees 2 million of his salary he is already receiving this year and 1 million next year.  So Timmins contract  averages 5.5 million guaranteed money and 6 million average salary per year.  Davis's extension is only one year at 6.75 million with 1 million guaranteed. How is that overpaid? Sounds like Davis's deal is par for the course as a linebacker in the league and our risk is a measly 1 million. It takes his cap from 8.2 this year to 6.75 next year.  Which is a win for us if he continues on his current pace and little risk if we don't keep him next year. This is a great contract for both parties. His cap number goes down but Davis get 6.75 next year in salary instead of 4.4 this year.  We only have to guarantee a minimal amount and  pay him if he performs at a high level in 2017.

Here is an optimistic thought. Hurney is finalizing all these contracts because he knows that costs will go up when we win a SB this year. So he is locking them in now. Watch Norwell fall next.

That's a fact Jack

Agree 100%.  Perhaps you could take the money and bring in a stop-gap FA for less if you look at it from a strict money standpoint but you basically poo on Davis and the rest of the team for what a million or so in cap savings....

No problem with this deal.  Hurney not giving away the franchise.

This deal isn't bad but if he continues with this philosophy of making panthers players feel good by giving them a pay raise then you end up in cap hell. The problem is this organization treats the players like family which is nice for the environment and players but it makes it so much harder to win.

There's no team going to rush to sign a 35 year old linebacker next year Lombardi or not, that's naive.

Star and Norwell market value is only going to go up this year as they are in their primes coming off rookie deals, not Davis

You just said that Pittsburgh signed a 39 year old linebacker in Harrison. So of course teams would sign a 34 year linebacker who is playing at a very high level. Especially with only 1 million guaranteed.

I figure Norwell is next. He just signed with  Rosenhaus. Not a coincidence. Hurney is going to lock him up so that when we win the Superbowl prices will really go up.

Then how do you explain that his cap number is going down from 8.2 million this year to 6.75 million next year. While giving Davis more in salary.

Hurney Magic.....

Writes for @RoaringRiot and other sites for analysis pieces. Formerly contributed to NFLBreakdowns. So yes, he does watch film moreso than the majority of fans.

Billy is going to be writing for an inferior site and not for us this season. But yeah, he's a very credible dude and knows his poo for sure. He doesn't toss out hot takes without being able to show you film to support his take.

Edit: got a pretty good laugh that C.S.R corrects to "an inferior site".

That's questionable, and even if he is his snap count won't justify it. In 2018 he'd somehow have to be better than last year AND be playing a significant amount of snaps, which would mean less for Shaq which is not a good thing. Just don't understand at all paying him starter money past this year.

Nope Panthers will play far more base 4-3, snap count want be issue as both of them will be on the field along with Luke

Joe Person has a  interesting article with TD's thoughts on the extension.  Per TD, the contract is incentive-laden and won't prevent the team from extending other players.  I'm sure there will be people here who won't believe him, but TD had never shown a propensity to be selfish and I don't have any reason to think otherwise with this situation.
