Steve Russ enters his sixth year at Air Force as the assistant head coach and fourth as the defensive coordinator and defensive backfield coach. Russ was the co-defensive coordinator and inside linebackers coach previously.

Russ’ first season as the lone defensive coordinator was impressive, as he completely revamped the defense and turned it into one of the finest in the conference. Air Force improved in all four major categories that season, including a remarkable 15.8 points per game improvement to 24.2 overall which led the conference and was 72 spots higher in the national rankings (33rd). The Falcons also improved in rushing, passing and total defense, including an over 100 yard improvement in rushing defense to 135.6 yards per game. That improvement went from ranking 119th nationally to 28th, which is a 91 spot improvement. In addition, the defense improved in third down defense from 125th to 36th, quarterback sacks from 114th to 24th, tackles for loss from 129th to 42nd. The defense maintained those lofty numbers the last two seasons, ranking first or second in the conference in seven categories. The unit was No. 10 nationally in rushing and 33rd in total defense in 2016.

impressive resume, check

connections to Ron......

This might upset some people's expectations.

To Ron?  No.

But it turns out that as a player, he was teammates with this guy's dad.

And UNCRules is right.  He was coaching linebackers at Ohio while Eric Washington was also coaching there.

    • The good thing about replacing a bad player is you really have nothing to lose. If their replacement is bad so what, you didn't get much worse and probably saved money.
    • I came over from the old Panthers Insider site. When Fox Sports bought that platform it slowly just started dying plus the guy who ran that site was dealing with some pretty significant health issues so the whole thing just slowly fell apart. Quite a few of us migrated over here. Not sure how many are still around.  I miss that place. It struck a nice balance of having enough active posters to keep productive conversation flowing but didn't have so much traffic that you end up with a lot of trolling BS. This place is getting there though since we shutdown new registrations but at some point we're going to have to open it back up or we'll watch this place slowly die off too as posters fall off for one reason or another. We just have to figure out a way to filter out the spam bots. It was a never ending battle to ban the spam bots to keep then from overrunning the site. You'd think they'd be a little more strategic. I mean, if you fill a site with nothing but spam people are just going to stop coming so it's not a sustainable model. But nope, every one of them makes dozens of duplicate threads filling up pages upon pages as soon as their account goes live.
    • lol...I don't remember that.  Although recalling what I had for breakfast yesterday is sometimes a challenge.  Hope it was a positive thing.
