Panthers hire Brady Hoke for DL Coach

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

He was D-line coach last year at Tenn.  Coached Derek Barnett.  He's a pretty special d-lineman.  I also think Eric Washington is going to have a lot to say with how the D-line is coached.

Overall, I don't think any of us can judge this hire because we have no clue at how much or how little he knows about coaching the defensive line.

Yes, he sucked as a head coach in college but this is so very different.  Apples to oranges.

Has been coaching at the college level since 1981.  Has never coached in the pros.

Completely outside the box near as I can tell.  No connection I can find to Rivera, Washington or even Sam Mills.

The only Panther I've so far been able to find any connection to?  Devin Funchess.  He was the head coach for the Wolverines while Funchess was playing there.

As a former head coach at Michigan though, he is a known name.

He was the San Diego State HC for a while. I'm guessing that Rivera bumped into him during his time in San Diego. The coaching community is pretty small when you think about it.

I hope this is fake

Marvez is a good source.

If correct, this might be the last coaching hire.  Unknown at this point whether they plan to bring in another Assistant OL coach or just let John Matsko handle it alone.  My guess is it'll just be Matsko, but we'll see.

He was a terrible head coach at Michigan. I'm hoping that he's one of those guys that a better coordinator than HC. It will be interesting to see what he brings to the table, but I'm not setting my hopes very high. It almost feels like RR is making sure there's not another coach on the staff that can step in as interim if he gets canned mid season.

I liked the Air Force hiring but this seems awful.

Imagine trying to entice Pep to come back after doing this.

Imagine going from high energy Eric Washington to this.

DL is a deep and nuanced position to teach and now we're letting Mr. Nappytime with no experience relating to adults at the NFL level come in and coach what has historically been the defining position group on our team?

I frankly would've been content with just promoting SM3 in name only to "Defensive Line Coach" and having him carry Gatorades and write notes down for de facto DL Coach Eric Washington.

He's going to be a position coach here not even a coordinator. Couldn't be further from being a head coach in terms of job duties. Coordinator is somewhat similar to head coach, but position coach is not.
