What's Hurney thinking about? A few general answers

"Know your history." That's pretty funny.

Hurney wasn't GM until the year after Smith was drafted. And Jack Bushovsky was the personnel guy (even Hurney himself acknowledges that.

And let me give you a bit of actual history. When the time came receive Smith's first contract negotiation, Marty Hurney famously pissed him off by referring to him as an "unproven" (and per some comments "marginal") receiver whose primary value was on special teams.

All but the Gettleworshipers believe Hurney was part of the group who greatly influenced the ‘01 draft.

Dawg, there is no way to look at our candidate choices "analytically" and choose Marty Hurney.

He just doesn't have it.

That's your opinion.  My scope is a little wider. But I'm not even arguing that point,  really, I am just not going to get all up in a huff if he is chosen.  Change is coming either way.  Like I said,  if he's as bad as you say he is,  then I only have to endure another season.  But,  I'm not going to cry if he manages to do some good things and prolongs his job.

Also disproven, and by Gross himself

Still sticking to the same bulls--t, I see.

There you go again.  You just refuse to read between the lines.  Life's just all black and white and you take everything at face value?  Yeah,  OK.

If by "wider scope" you mean "hey maybe this is a good idea even though there's no evidence to suggest so", then okay.

There's no reason to have to endure even one more minute of Marty Hurney as GM.

Well, our current GM choices are pretty black and white, aren't they?

To be more specific, we're choosing between "very highly qualified" black and "proven to poor at his job" white.

Not what I was referring to,  but the irony of the situation is inescapable.  Now we'll see what transpires as a result. You just might be pleasantly surprised. Perhaps,  maybe sooner rather than later.

I know it doesn't fit your narrative but Gettleman wasn't exactly beloved by players. In fact he cost us talent by his antics and arrogance. Man, what could have been if he had dealt with Ted Ginn in a better way.

A three out of eleven success rate is a fact.

No experience as a scout or a personnel guy other than being the Panthers GM is a fact.

His stepping into a situation where free agency in the draft had already been taken care of is a fact.

"Maybe he's changed" is not.

Assistant GM with San Diego, where he handled the scouting department along with the Cap and contract negotiations, among many other things.... ???

Him along with Jack Buschofsky scouted and ran the 2001 draft. Much more credit should go to those two because Seifert was hands off during that draft.

So now the credit should go to the scouts (if you want to call Hurney a scout) and not to who actually made the decision to draft him?

In business, yes, I can understand that, but this is football business and Hurney is severely lacking in one certain aspect of being a good GM: Scouting.

The dude is by all accounts a nice guy, and very smart. The further from 2010 we get, the more I really feel like that whole mess was JR's call to re-sign those nice young men, even though a few of them sucked.

But where Hurney really falls short is the evaluation of talent. I'm not just talking about the draft, He has a great track record in the 1st round, I won't argue that, but 2nd and 3rd, he's really sub-par at talent evaluation, and with pro scouting he was down right abysmal. That's where Gettleman outclassed him - pro scouting and evaluating. We all know that Kalil sucks, but there were 5 or 6 other diamonds in the rough that he unearthed at a discount for short term rentals that certainly panned out in our favor. Hell, we wouldn't have had to get Kalil had Oher's brain been scrambled because he looked like the long term solution to our LT problems before that.

So honestly, I do feel like Hurney can and probably has learned from the past where he blew all our money on an outdated position on aging vets who didn't deserve it. I feel he'll be more hesitant to blow his wad this time around. But I don't trust him to evaluate which of those guys to keep, and in turn, which players to sign as FA's to replace those who leave.

Gettleman was a god awful drafter. What is his 2nd and 3rd round track record though?
