Panthers put interim GM Marty Hurney on paid leave after ex-wife’s allegations

Media backlash shitshow as a result of one small article with just accusations of a few extremely minor incidents essentially forcing him to sell the team... pretty ridiculous that that's all it takes to change someone's life so drastically.

Can't really call the existence of four secret non-disclosure agreements to be "minor incidents". You don't pay significant hush money to cover up something that could be seen as a slight misunderstanding.

Not following league policy and alerting the NFL to those agreements put the team in a really really bad spot.

Depends on how one defines "significant." And settling a civil case out of court has absolutely no bearing on or indication of guilt whatsoever.

Raye, to me, is absolutely a legitimate candidate.  And his history with Rivera, Norv Turner and Don Gregory would at least seem to offer an inside track if he interviewed well.

I'd be fine with Dawson.  Mayhew's probably my least favorite choice of the three but I'd take him.

If they do decide to interview others, Ryan Cowden and Trent Kirchner are obvious choices with Panther connections.  There could be other options.  Heck, we could conceivably even interview Jeff Ireland (I'd rather we didn't).

Meanwhile, free agency is approaching fast.  Most teams are using this time to try and re-sign their own guys that they want to keep.  We have a few of those two, but we're busy with this.  Oh. and by the way, the team is for sale.

What happens next?  Who knows?

Hey Igo, you picked a heck of a day to be offline.

The scary thing is that while Hurney's on leave, we don't have anybody to really make those GM decisions.  Most likely Gregory or Rivera would be making the decisions on Norwell, Star, Gano, and any potential FA additions, but likely won't have final say, that would go to Tina Becker, who should definitely not be making long-term roster decisions.

Hopefully, this will get resolved fairly quickly so we can all move forward.

Yep this is the worst part for fans. Hurney getting the boot means we are going to be very behind.

That's kinda what makes me think they won't bother to do additional interviews.  The process would certainly go quicker if they just took one of the guys they've already talked to.

I'm still hoping for Raye myself.

I honestly didn't pay attention to any of them because I knew the job was Hurney's.

Here to help...

GM Candidate Profiles

Candidate Profiles and Videos

Mayhew was a last minute addition so I never really did a full workup on him.  If you look up his bio, you'll basically find it's Lions this, Lions that, Lions the other up until last year when he was with the 49ers.

(now watch him get the job)

I think you're right, and also expect Raye will walk away with the job...assuming the whole thing with Hurney doesn't blow over in the next couple of days.

I've done a lot of speculating, but I'm not even gonna try to predict what happens next.

I haven't even picked my jaw up off the floor since I clicked into the forum and read this headline.

My literal first thoughts: "This can't be serious. It's gotta be a joke or a troll thread. First Richardson, now Hurney?  What the #@$% is going on?"

Some of the stuff I read here is hipocritical by many people.   Many of those,  not all but many,  saying fire Hurney are the same people saying Hardy should have played after he was accused and should still be on this team.   What's the difference?  One was a liked player and one a hated GM.

I don't know the full details other than news and we all know how truthful news agency's are.

Greg Hardy is actually kind of relevant here, but not for this reason.

Hardy was ultimately found innocent of his charges (granted under perhaps dubious circumstances but hey whatever) yet the Panthers still chose to part ways with him.

If the Panthers were to stand by Marty Hurney in his situation after having decided to wave goodbye to Hardy, then it probably wouldn't be too long before somebody would be pointing out a certain obvious difference in physical characteristics between Hardy and Hurney.

Fair? Probably not, but does it really matter?

Right now the Panthers are driving a truck full of dynamite over a minefield set in rough terrain. There are a whole lot of things that could go wrong and cause everything to blow up in their faces.

I don't want to see that happen. I seriously doubt anybody here does.

Huge question: Was this all fictional or did Hurney settle it out of court but not quick enough to keep it out of the court system?

I don't know but this stinks. Her lawyer responded quick to say that it was dismissed. That stinks too.

I don't see a way for Hurney to slide back in on the right side of this. The team is stuck scrambling and us fans are left with a giant pile of flamming poo to cheer for going into a time of the year they needed to give everyone hope. Here is to hoping that Tina is more than a puppet...

    • I have said if you out even an average QB into the offense we are averaging 25+ points a game. But that will never happen with Bryce under center.
    • The defense is 28 out of 32 in salary cap allocation for 2025. We have a ton of resources tied up in the offense including the highest paid OL in the league multiple 1st round WR's and multiple recent draft picks across the offense at TE and RB and we have two 1000 yard backs. Bryce and company couldn't get past Tyler Shough and his crew in 2 games. That's all there is to it. You can spin it and put the entire onus on the defense to your heart's desire it doesn't change the fact that this is an OFFENSIVE team now. If you want to argue that we should revert back to a defensive identity as we have been in the past which has brought us success then I will agree with you on that. But as it stands the onus is on the offense because that is where we have invested through the nose. Dave Canales and Bryce Young need to do a hell of a lot better than they have against the rebuilding Saints who without us should only have 2 wins this season.
    • Bryce is not trending up. He is the same QB he has always been. Bottom of the league in most categories.  If Canales thinks he can build a contender with Bryce then he is a bigger idiot then I thought.  Offense next year will have the same issues and be just as inconsistent as it was this year.  We have seen Bryce’a ceiling and it is 175 yards a game and that is not a QB you keep around as your starter. That is barely a backup.
