Voth: Time to draft a mid-round QB

Since making Cam Newton the No. 1 overall pick in 2011, Carolina is the only team in the league that hasn’t taken a quarterback in the past six drafts. Even New England and Green Bay, who have somewhat decent quarterbacks, have each picked two since 2012. It’s time the Panthers use a mid-round pick on one.

"Mid-round" would generally mean third to fifth.

My guess would be it's at least being discussed in the Panthers offices.  I don't think this is just blind speculation.

Why not just pick one up in FA?

Using a draft pick on a QB after watching receivers drop passes left and right on the road in the playoffs is a little absurd.

I could speculate three reasons:

1) They no longer feel the need to have a veteran backing up Newton

2) The Panthers might want to start grooming a successor

3) Cheaper

Will there not be any potential options available in free agency that can reasonably fit those stipulations?

I'm just honestly viewing it as a bit of a slap in the face to use anything more than a 6th or 7th rounder on a backup QB when we asked our current QB last year to literally drag us to the playoffs carrying our run game while throwing to guys who wouldn't even make the roster on many other NFL teams. I'm not saying I don't want a capable backup to a degree, I'm just saying think how that would look if you were in Newton's shoes. Especially if we are indeed cutting Stewart like it has been rumored. These are just things to ponder.

    • Does this mean only topics from within the last year or any topics with posts from the last year? i.e. if there are any old threads we feel should be kept around for whatever reasons, would a bump of that thread before the update ensure it's kept around in full or do the posts from more than a year old still disappear?
    • I'm more intrigued at him becoming our future LG. There were some people who thought he was better suited to be a guard in the NFL to begin with.  Then if Freeling ends up being a legit LT, moving Ickey to LG could give us an incredibly strong left side of our OL for years to come. Ickey has only played on the Left side his whole career, both in college and the NFL, so I just wonder if keeping him on the left side, even if shifting inside, would be better than putting him outside on the right side. Just hoping him growing up a Panthers fan will make him want to stay here and move positions than enter FA so he can stay at LT somewhere else, particularly since LT is the big money position on the OL, so he likely can get paid more by someone else to play LT than play LG or RT here for us.
