The whole Gettleman vs. Hurney thing is so entirely played out at this point.

Not trying to start a debate about anything other than this particular player, and this particular spot in which the Panthers find themselves.

It was an easy decision then, the bad decision was made, and now we are having to deal with said absurdly dumb decision.  That is all.

He didn't have a good year he had arguably the best season of any kicker in the league bar none. He made the probowl being pushed by a rookie kicker who also had a good year. Keeping him over Butkur was a no brainer watching them in preseason and practice.  It cost us a 7th rounder to draft Butkur and we only moved him to the practice squad when we needed the roster spot for depth. So Butkur got poached when we had hoped to keep him. Not nearly as big as people are making it out to be. Finally with a budget of 165 million, spending five to lock up someone who scored over 120 points for us last year is cheap in comparison to the amount of money we spent in dead cap space for someone not even on the roster. Add he led all kickers in touch backs and honestly I don't understand the complaints.

Gano missed 3 extra points.

Had zero makes outside of 50 yards on the season.

Butker missed 0 extra points.

Made 4 from 50+.

Butker would have cost us 485k in cap last season, and 575k next.

Gano cost us 4M in cap space last season, and no telling what this season.

It was a dumb call then, it's a dumb call now.

Why are some people in this fanbase so hellbent on giving Gano a pass for missing kicks? That's his job. And either way, this year he is going to be paid near or right at the top amongst his peers at his position to do so.

Remember how much relentless bullshit Cam Newton got early in his career for missing that game winning touchdown in one of our first outings with the Seahawks? For the next 2 years, anytime he missed a pass we had to hear about how he couldn't win with the game on the line, and how he threw a pass into the ground. But our pro bowl kicker ultimately possibly costing us a playoff win on the road against our arch rival is no biggie. What? Be consistent. Especially if we are more often than not going to continually expect Cam to make chicken salad out of chicken poo.

Gano had a damn good year, not gonna lie. Every kicker is gonna miss a few. Just like every QB is going to miss some throws, every receiver is going to drop some passes, every lineman is going to miss a block, ever LB is going to miss a tackle, etc. No one is perfect.

If we could go back and do it over, yeah we keep Butker but hindsight is always 20/20. No sense in crying over it at this point. I would prefer tagging Gano and paying him $5M this year vs. tying ourselves to a long-term contract to a kicker who has been historically unreliable. That's all.

No one is crying.

Everyone should be pissed at Hurney.
