It's that time of the year for me.

A non-top 10 DE won't contribute in year 1. DE is arguably our biggest need going forward and with Pep back this year we have the luxury of being able to groom one and redshirt one this year. If we wait until next year we may not have that ability if Pep retires. My problem with DE this year is I really just don't like the class that much. Rasheem Green is my favorite realistic target and I want him badly, whether in the first or second. But outside of him there's Davenport who probably won't be there at 24 and Key who may be the next Randy Gregory. Obviously Chubb is a stud but way out of reach. Don't really like the other prospects in the first 2 days. There are some later round guys who are intriguing but as any later round guy you can't count on them to be a solution. Green would be a huge addition even if we have to take him at 24. And he would see the field in the rotation. Pep is a situational player and Mario may play roughly 60-70% of the snaps? Lot of DE snaps to go around and we can upgrade on Horton and Cox.

DEs take time, which is your point, but the lack of talent  is the biggest reason we probably will not go DE in the drafft. We should have $50m+ in cap room next year, but that is because we are losing half our core---we have aged out. Olsen, Davis, RKalil, Adams, is a lot of talent to replace, especially when you have several second contracts to work on (Williams, Thompson, Funchess, maybe).

So, to your point, Addison will be 32 in September 2019, Horton is giving you his best football and is probably at his ceiling, Peppers is gone--And we will likely not pick early.  Hall will be entering his third year, but there are no signs that we should have confidence in him yet.

I would like to add that Marty may have to trade a lot this year during the draft.  We may have to address the needs (Olsen, RKalil, Adams, Davis) this year as much as we can so we can spend our cap re-signing our core and finding a veteran DE.

He really talked up Harold Landry and Carlton Davis, said people aren't mocking them high enough.

Lol Landry’s crazy good.

He's good, but he's not going to be a 4-3 DE.  He's 100% a 3-4 OLB.   That may the reason he is pushed down.   The scheme fit and teams drafting towards the top is a major reason he is falling on some mocks (I think he goes GB at 14.  A 3-4 team with a aging Matthews and need at edge rusher)

Nah, he can be a 4-3 end.

I disagree, he really got pushed around and struggled mightliy when lined up hands down this year at times.  His big strength 2 seasons ago when he blew up came as a stand up rusher like Von Miller

Theres a reason all his comparisons are Vic Beasley, Bruce Irvin etc.  All OLB guys

Disagree. He could absolutely fit as a 4-3 imo. If he drops to us he’s BPA imo.

The Panthers brought scouts to his pro day but so did most of the teams drafting ahead of us. I would be surprised if he slid to 24. I think he can be a dominant 4-3

Firmly disagree, thought he was most successful with his hand in the dirt, his arm length and speed off the go makes him really hard to throw off the line.

    • Sometimes its fun to read the threads/posts.  The panthers could literally hire a groundskeeper and we'd have a thread "improving the field for no other reason to prop up Bryce Young".  Apparently no move is ever done to actually make the team better.  All a conspiracy to just focus on Bryce Young. Or suddenly daydreaming and reminiscing about Sam Darnold when he was hated more than Bryce Young.  Its really fun to do a message board search about Darnold during that time period.   Or thinking there is just a tree that grows QB, and you can just easily go up and pluck one.
    • Yeah okay. We as an organization have been more patient with him than many. And there has been a small parade of guys drafted since he was, also to bad teams, that have passed him. Some have lapped him. As a fan I am out of patience but he gets this year it is out of my hands always has been. I just hope the bar is higher than it has been for him.    FWIW, XL dropped two passes last year. He did do some other bad stuff, just saying.
    • Except it takes those QB's a few years to develop because they needed to learn the mental side of the game and have it catch up to their physical attributes. Bryce was supposed to be a QB savant who already had a fully developed mental side of the game and that was going to make up for his lack of physical ability.  And his lack of NFL level QB physical traits has been clear as day to anyone who has watched him the last 3 years, mainly, he just doesn't have an NFL arm, he can't zip the ball into tight spaces or throw on a line down the field like is needed at this level.
