The cap hits, at least the first two years, of the four-year, $17 million deal the Panthers gave Graham Gano aren't as high as his average $4.25 million salary that ranks second in the league among kickers. This year's hit is $3,437,500, followed by $3,737,500 in 2019. It takes a significant jump the final two years, $4,537,500 in 2020 and $5,287,500 in 2021, according to ESPN's Roster Management. The Panthers have $24,282,426 in cap space after this deal.

My honest take on past results is that it was less about spending on the wrong positions as it was on the wrong players.

Handing a big payday to Charles Godfrey, for example...

and james anderson

and jake (more the timing than anything)

Yeah...And then there was stuff like drafting Amini over Cordy Glenn and such.

Said it elsewhere.  It isn't necessarily the methodology.  It's just a matter of making poor choices.

Oh good Lord, no :)

You might be able to make a half-decent argument out of Will Witherspoon, but James Anderson was a JAG.

If Shaq has a season with 130 tackles, 3.5 sacks, 1 int, 1 forced fumbles followed by another season with 145 tackles, 1.5 sacks, 2 ints you’d be calling Gettleman the Einstein of pro football.

History revisionist, jags don’t have seasons like those.

Anderson was a JAG.  Heck, Gantt called him that for years.

The Lord Gantt said it so it must be true.

The term JAG is reserved for players such as Shepard, Bersin, Naanee. Players whose stats can be replaced by any free agent.

Anderson actually produced.

So did Matt Stafford, with significantly better stats than Cam Newton.

So who's the better quarterback?

Matt Stafford is a very good quarterback. Same tier as Cam Newton. Cam Newton stats cannot be replaced by any ordinary quarterback.

What the hell does this have to do with James Anderson being a JAG?

Because you appealed to stats, which is a mistake.

Matt Stafford may be a stat machine, but he's not clutch at all and I wouldn't want him at the helm of my team.

If you want a stat driven sport, try baseball.  In football, they're nowhere near as important.

Matt Stafford is not a JAG. He cannot be replaced by any Joe Schmo.

James Anderson was not a JAG. He wasn’t a great player, but he was solid for us. He had two good seasons in Carolina.

Jags are the Deke Cooper, Ed Dickson, Byron Bell of the football world.

Stafford isn't a JAG, but he's also not a franchise quarterback.  He just gets paid like one.
