RIP: Lee Ermey, Drill Sergeant Full Metal Jacket

His scene was so important to drag the viewer into the world these kids found themselves in. Kubricks having Ermey take the part over and make it his was a brilliant decision for the movie.

When I was in boot camp and our DI tried this stuff we all kind of laughed (internally of course) since we all knew we were the best company in the division by then LOL

The FMJ drill instructor portrayed in this movie was almost the guy I had in boot camp.... decades before this movie came out.

I do remember laying in my bunk the first night of boot and wondering just what the fug had I gotten myself into.

And 20 years after that I laughed when I remember thinking this E-6 was the most powerful person in my universe at the time; and when I retired knowing I had out-promoted him by 3 paygrades.

    • It’s summer league, so take it with a grain of salt. But have to admit the team has played really well and been fun to watch. Agreed, take what we can get.
    • There are a very few number of legitimate NFL level QB's on this planet. I'm not saying he is not capable of being a backup still given that very limited number. All I'm saying is some people can choose to look at the reality glass half full or glass half empty. I'm relatively trying to remain near the middle. I do appreciate that he has experience with which he can pass on to Bryce. But I think his resume is being put on a level that does not line up. It's interesting you mentioned Flacco. I'd take him mentoring the Panthers starting QB in a heartbeat. At least Joe has won in the playoffs. And won a Super Bowl to boot. He might have only had success largely in that season but man what a run he led that offense on. I can respect that. I'm not saying I don't like or respect Andy. I do like him. And he's a ginger. But as a local fan who has seen losing losing losing mediocrity and a few very short lived seasons of potential greatness. Give me any ounce of greatness every time. Then we can hang our hat on mentoring at some level. That's my position and all I'm trying to convey. Thanks for the chat.
