The son of Carolina Panthers owner Jerry Richardson says he can’t imagine a better choice to buy the NFL franchise than Charleston businessman Ben Navarro.

Quote

Mark Richardson said he has not spoken to his father or any of the brokers on Navarro’s behalf, although he has had conversations with Navarro about the sale process.

Quote

Mark Richardson said he would consider remaining with the Panthers as a limited partner if Navarro wins the bid.

“I would give serious consideration if he were the next owner and if he wanted me to continue to be involved,”

More positive PR for Navarro.  Surely this is a sign.

It's definitely a positive, even though I'm not a huge fan of Mark Richardson, per se.

If not for Ian Rapoport's story about the sale being "not quite there yet" I'd take this as further confirmation that they were just waiting for the signing on the bottom line to be finalized.

Really hoping the delay isn't anything major, and especially not something that hurts Navarro's bid.

Also could be Jerry's way of showing his favorite owner since the NFL gags him from doing so. Clearly Navarro is the pick but it's probably the NFL who is holding the matter up. The last few owners were hand picked by the NFL and Navarro isn't their favorite.

It's possible. No way to know for sure.

The league could be holding things up. Richardson could be acting out. Or heck, could just be something as simple as the process taking longer than expected.

Definitely hope it's option three, but I guess we'll see.

I don't see Richardson holding it up. He owns the team and he was the one wanting to sell. This process was smooth till Tepper threw a wrench in it.

IMO, there is no way Mark would come out publicly with this without JR's knowledge and consent.  So, this is really JR letting everyone know who the winner is without actually saying it so as not to take attention away from the draft.

I really believe that while there may be some disagreement between JR and the league, I don't think it is anywhere near as bad as some are thinking.  JR has always been a league guy, and he's had strong relationships with most of the owners as well as league leaders.  So, I really don't think this is blowing up as big as some are interpreting.

I also don't think Tepper is an issue.  Sure the league wanted him to win, but they are all business men, so they understand that JR is not going to give a several hundred million dollar discount to Tepper just because he's the league's top choice.  And I really believe that from everything we know of Navarro that he will/has won over the bulk of owners, as well as league leaders.

Yeah, pretty sure the "I haven't talked to anyone about it" line is Grade A bulls--t.

Gantt did confirm Richardson isn't happy with the league (and vice versa) but is the old man cantankerous enough to blow millions of dollars? I'd like to think not, but I acknowledge it's possible.

As to Tepper, yes the league favors him but the only way they could really stop Richardson from selling to Navarro would be to outright disapprove the sale. As we've discussed, that extends the process and keeps Richardson in the spotlight longer. That's the last thing the league wants.

I ultimately do still think Navarro gets the team. Here's hoping whatever is gumming up the works right now is nothing major.

I don’t believe for one second that Mark hasent spoken to his father about Navarro. In my best estimation it feels like Jerry is using Kestenbaum (why the hell is he making second visits!?) to sqeeuze as much money out of Navarro as possible. God, I’ll be so happy when/if Navarro is the official owner of the Carolina Panthers. I really feel like he would be an amazing owner. He’s the guy to bring a Lombardi to the Carolinas in my opinion.

To be fair, the article only says that he was in Charlotte, not that he visited the Panthers.

It's entirely possible that he did, but we don't have any confirmation.

Or it could be JR's way of getting the last couple of votes he needs from his peers onboard.  I have a feeling he wants a very lopsided victory as far as the vote for new owner.

    • Bryce has been in the NFL 3 years and still looks like a very mediocre QB. Most games are nothing but mediocre plays with a highlight reel every now and then.  He is a very INCONSISTENT QB and it’s very fustrating. He does not deserve a 5th year option, even though the Panthers and all the dumb asses in the front office will give it to him.
    • I’ve rarely ever been more sure of anything than losing out — but how can anyone say with a straight face “Bryce hasn’t improved, but Canales has and he’s masks his flaws”. You have to be so out of touch with reality to put one way above the other when discussing those two.
    • Last night was the classic example of a visiting team just holding on through the wave of emotion a home team has at the start of a big time game. Bama’s first two kickoff returns really set them back as far as playcalling and allowed OU to dictate field position. The emotion of the home crowd fed into what OU was doing at that point, and it felt like Bama would not be able to overcome that.     Once the kickoff returner was told to fair catch every kick, the game shifted, as Bama wasn’t starting each drive inside their own 15. It was then that Bama was able to make some plays, outscoring OU 34-7 the rest of the way.  I think the last 3/4 of the game proves Bama was the better team. OU was just able to ride the initial wave of emotion to a big lead, but Bama held on just enough.  However, had OU blocked the punt on Bama’s second drive and scored a TD (vice a FG on the ensuing drive), things likely would have been different.  Anyway, Roll Tide!
