Matt "Speed bump McGee" Kalil..

Recommended Posts

I've been seeing a lot of huddlers here tear down Matt Kalil like he's the worst left tackle in the NFL. Frankly getting tired of it. But well the huddle is gonna huddle.

The following information if from a person that has access to coaches film and did a break down of every game Matt played in including the Saints playoffs game.. Props for Kevin A. For this information and thank you for your time on doing this.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Matt Kalil gave up 35 pressures and 5 sacks this season. In weeks 2, 3 and 7 he gave up 17 pressures and 5 sacks.

So if you exclude the Buffalo, Bears and the first Saints game, you're looking at 18 pressures and 0 sacks. So basically he had 3 horrible games which killed his PFF rating. Outside of that he was solid.

In the playoffs "Speed bump McGee" gave up only 2 pressures. That was the best among all of our lineman except for Trai. Sounds like Saints DE Cam Jordan was salty that Matt was working his ass. In fact, Jordan moved to the right side where he started working RT Daryl Williams because M. Kalil wasn't having it.

Matt Kalil had less penalties and less penalty yards than Nate Solder of the Patriots who many of y'all wanted in free agency. Lane Johnson of the Eagles had 10 penalties - Matt only had 7.

-------------------------------------------------

So there it is. That's your "Speed bump McGee"  last year.

This is a good question, I'll have to ask the person that did the break down how much Norwell influenced this. if at all.

Any LT is going to be helped or hindered depending on who their guard is.  You probably could take any tackle right or left and see there is a difference in their play if their guard removed or replace.  For the good or bad.

Pass protection was never his major issue as far as I'm concerned. He's not physical in run blocking. He's basically useless. A pylon. He was helped/covered for by Norwell being a monster.

We're a running oriented team. Sooooooo Matt Kalil needs to improve that aspect or GTFO.

Seeing as we're about to become a passing team with Norv.. I feel quite fine with Matt.

I read something from Panthers.com I believe that said instead of rehabbing( hip issue from Viking days) he has been able to strictly hit the weight room this offseason. I am hoping that helps his run blocking. I am optimistic

It's not like we're going to replace him this summer.  Even if we would, it's not like a better LT is just sitting at home on his couch, or that a team will trade one away at a reasonable price.  He's our starting Left Tackle.

I appreciate the post, it's good to have something to maybe look forward to or believe in, and a reason not to be afraid of our line play.

EDIT:  I'm old enough to remember when Gross moved to the left side and people who didn't know what they were talking about said he was too soft to run block.  The more things change, the more they remain the same.

    • Any idea what happened to him at LSU? im reading that he was considered a 1st round pick in 2023, had an off 2024 season with only 4 sacks but was also on a horrible FSU team then went to LSU where he was supposed to be on an aggressive defense that should have given him a lot of sacks but he only ended up with one….   was he injured? Did the top SEC competition expose him? What happened? Cause this guy was considered a top prospect .
    • Sometimes its fun to read the threads/posts.  The panthers could literally hire a groundskeeper and we'd have a thread "improving the field for no other reason to prop up Bryce Young".  Apparently no move is ever done to actually make the team better.  All a conspiracy to just focus on Bryce Young. Or suddenly daydreaming and reminiscing about Sam Darnold when he was hated more than Bryce Young.  Its really fun to do a message board search about Darnold during that time period.   Or thinking there is just a tree that grows QB, and you can just easily go up and pluck one.
    • Yeah okay. We as an organization have been more patient with him than many. And there has been a small parade of guys drafted since he was, also to bad teams, that have passed him. Some have lapped him. As a fan I am out of patience but he gets this year it is out of my hands always has been. I just hope the bar is higher than it has been for him.    FWIW, XL dropped two passes last year. He did do some other bad stuff, just saying.
