Peter King on the Panthers investigation

Color me shocked...  NOT.

Look at all the "big" investigations the NFL has conducted since Goodell became commish.  All of them reportedly had all kinds of damning evidence that would prove the accusations to be true - i.e., Spygate, Ray Rice, etc., and the NFL demonstrated that their favorite way to tackle these scandals was to sweep them under the rug and not address them at all...  until they were forced to - i.e., when the Pats got caught cheating again with Deflate Gate, when the Rice video was made public, etc.  With Bounty Gate I would have to go back and refresh on, but iirc, the NFL didnt want to push the issue with that and drug their feet until more and more evidence went public , like the Gregg Williams audio...  and from a PR standpoint, for a huge, powerful organization, making the problem go away is better than acknowledging it and doling out consequences for it to admit wrongdoing, corruption, or scandal that affect the integrity and public perception of your corporation.

In summary, Goodell and the NFL are greedy, soulless shitbags.

Hence why you go with outside investigators.  Ideally, they should be objective, but the people who talked to King make it sound like they weren't trying that hard.

What's funny about that though is that even an apparently lazy investigation still netted enough to confirm that Richardson did even more than he was accused of.

Doesn't sound like he was trying all that hard to hide it.

Please tell me you don't actually believe this stuff from the NFL regarding no NDAs. The whole point of an NDA is for the information never to become public. No one is holding pressers to announce the signing of NDAs.

I doubt very seriously Tepper would be willing to pay off an employee to cover JR's dirt but that doesn't necessarily mean someone won't still give a try.

The NFL didn't make a pledge to disallow NDAs.  Tepper did, and he wasn't equivocal about it.

And the point is that Tepper isn't willing to cover for Richardson, but what happens if he finds out someone who's currently part of his organization was?

We have zero current employee's with the nads to "shake down" Tepper.

Yeah, that ain't happenin.

And what are you gonna do?  Blackmail the Director of Pro Scouting?  How much of a payday are you gonna get from that?

King didn't retire.  He just left Sports Illustrated.

For its part, SI has been pretty aggressive when it comes to going after Jerry Richardson.

It's kinda hard not to notice that this started not terribly long after Jonathan Jones joined their staff.

let it go..."that was then, this is now"

Yes, this is now.

And if "now" includes people who enabled Jerry Richardson, and employees who are upset about it are willing to go to the owner (who has stated he's willing to listen) then further changes could be looming.

a very good point...jones has always wanted to get his

That's actually not the point.

This isn't to say that Jones is trying to make a name for himself off of Richardson.  In fact, the original story was given to two other reporters.

That said, Jones spent several years covering the Panthers and would have been in a position to hear a lot of the whispers and stories that led to this scandal coming out.

I don't think it's a coincidence, but that's not a knock on Jones.  I may not agree with him on politics and such, but he's doing his job.

Granted, and prior to the #metoo movement it was pretty much SOP.

The NFL gave their tip of the hat to the #metoo movement in getting Richardson to sell his team. I wouldn't expect them to go any further except to say: "We've taken care of this and punished the perpetrator to the maximum of our ability."

And really, that's what they've done. He has been kicked out of the club. He sold out for over $2 billion and that will probably see him through with fewer real world problems than me or you.

But let's get real, these guys (the NFL owners) would reinstate prima nocta if they could. We're, at best, just peons to them.

The general MO of powerful men is that they will get away with as much as they possibly can.

They've taken some hits in recent years with the Josh Brown and Ray Rice stories.  Otherwise, who knows?

The question for the Panthers is more about Tepper than the NFL, though.

True. Just don't expect him to be saintly.

And really, let's just watch some football. Let's get past the owners' and let's get past the anthem, let's get this thing kicked off and get to enjoying it again.

His bio doesn't exactly make a case for sainthood. He's a confirmed a--hole, though arguably the good kind.

And no, we don't know. In a way, I think this could actually be something of a test. Tepper has made some pretty big and bold "not on my watch" type statements. It's on him to live up to that talk.

He's dealt directly with the players on the anthem issue. Let's see what he does with employees.
