Receiving stats through week 3

I'll be taking advantage of the bye week as best as I can to do a bunch of stat crunching...

I started yesterday with getting my spreadsheet set up for in-depth tracking of Panthers receiving data.

Here's a summary table of receiving stats through week 3:

No surprise to see CMC leading the list in terms of % of snaps played; % targets, receptions & reception % (2nd to Olsen who is injured).

FUNCHESS leads in yards; big plays (25 yards+) and also his production in terms of yards per his number of targets is highest on the team.

Let me explain that far right column a little more. It's the difference between % of passing yards per receiver - % of targets per receiver. So FUNCHESS has produced nearly 29% of team passing yards while getting only about 22% of the targets.

Rookie Ian Thomas is a big surprise with the number of snaps he's playing and his relatively high number of targets. His 70% reception % (catching 7 of 10 passes) is encouraging, but they have mostly been for short yards.

Rookie DJ Moore  has only 4 targets & 2 catches n 3 games, taking 1 of them for a 51 yard TD. Obviously fans are anxious to see him get more targets and make more catches! His whopping 27 avg yards per catch is obviously due to tiny sample size. But still...! Sweet!

Torrey Smith has the 3rd most targets on the team after CMC & Funch. With 15 targets & 7 catches, his reception % is around 47%. OUCH.  Really want to see that come up...!

I like looking at the snaps to target ratio (2nd column from the far right). No surprise CMC has the lowest - basically getting a target every 7 snaps he plays; while DJ Moore has the highest. Getting a target every 17 snaps. Funchess & Wright are targeted about every 8 snaps.  The average for all receivers is a target every 10 snaps.

Is it wrong I only have eyes for Thomas' stats?

I mean, I knew going into this year CMC would do his thing.  Funchess would mostly do his thing.  And don't get me wrong, I hate that Olsen is hurt.  But considering we are still 2-1, came off our best running game in I don't know how long (I am probably intentionally forgetting due to still being on a CMC high), and Thomas is getting some great experience..I will take it.

The only other stats I really seem to focus on is Torrey Smith.  But more in a Is-This-Worth-5-Million sorta way.

Thanks for the appreciation!

Feel free to ask questions / make suggestions as to what you want to see.  I have a ton more info in my spreadsheets, but not sure what people find helpful.  Too much data makes peoples' eyes glaze over sometimes.

Let me know too whether graphs or tables are more useful. I sometimes focus too much on tables, I think.

Here's a quick overview of the passing stats week to week so far:

[Just noticed I need to clean up / clarify those season total and average per game columns on the right.  In some cases the figures under season totals are averages per game...  Hopefully it makes sense.]

I find the target data interesting, so just one more table on that even though I've posted 2 graphs above.  Funchess is about the only receiver getting a consistent % of targets.  Not really a surprise.  But I was surprise at how much Wright's targets dropped off vs the Bengals:

In addition to looking at how the targets were divided (above), here is each players targets per snap, i.e. they were targeted on what % of the snaps they played week to week:

Can we please cut Smith ffs

Yeah, his numbers are pretty ugly.  No way to sugar coat it.  But at this point with Samuel and Byrd not playing, it's not gonna happen.

The real question, hopefully, will be can Samuel supplant him once he's healthy and back in the games.  I surely hope so.  From at least my amateur fan perspective Torrey's not looked great.  I can't tell if there's any "less-obvious" way he's been helping out in terms of drawing coverage or creating space for other guys....

I know what you mean but 5 million for the season is hardly anything is it really. I personally thought we'd see Torrey Smith run a lot more vertical routes to get behind the defenses but that hasn't happened yet, maybe once Curtis Samuel is back he'll be doing that more?

It doesn't really make sense to subtract the penetration of targets from the penetration of yardage and then represent them as a %.. It's a basis point difference of two things that are very different measures (yards vs targets).

It's just a roundabout way of yards per reception only you're giving negatives to high targets guys that run shorter routes
