You know who isn't getting enough credit? Marty Hurney

I know we've all been (rightly) beating up on Torrey Smith for his failures on the field, and thus we might want to hold that against Hurney . . . however . . . consider the other end of that deal.  Hurney managed to dump Daryl Worley before he imploded completely.  No, Torrey hasn't been wonderful, but he played at least some part in bringing Eric Reid to us.  It's also fair to question whether he would have gotten as many opportunities had Samuel / Byrd been healthy.

I'm actually becoming a believer in Hurney 2.0 . . . I think it's possible he is figuring it out.

I totally agree. I'd much rather have Torrey Smith on this team than Worley. Smith did have a fantastic TD in Atlanta and he has a history of taking a long time to turn it on when he's on a new team. Not worried, the trade was completely worth it.

The whole ordeal that led to his return was rather bizarre, but Hurney has been surprisingly steady overall. I don't know if he's the right guy long term, but if we make a playoff run I'm good with him.

Also, just of note. At the time I was a little annoyed, but looking back, the fact that we got a 3rd rounder for Kelvin Benjamin is practically robbery at this point.

Wow.  Didn't even think of that . . . but holy cow.

Perhaps the space aliens theory has legs . . .

For fun, I am almost postive Marty would not have drafted Vernon Butler in 2016.

Who do yall think Marty would have drafted?  I think either Hunter Henry, Ognah, or Xavian Howard

Probably Everette Brown or Armanti Edwards. For fun. Or Pickles?

The whole Star/Norwell/Poe/Breeland set of transactions could be nitpicked. Maybe the real mistake was signing Trai before the 2017 season, probably would have been cheaper afterwards and we could have negotiated a way to keep both. Anyway, yeah, overall he's done an excellent job. I absolutely love getting proven wrong in this case.

I brought this up in another topic, but yeah, Marty has been doing a great job. Not just this year, but last as well. That trading away of Kelvin Benjamin? In hindsight I think we'd all agree that it was definitely for the best. Getting Peppers to come back? Beautiful! Drafting, so far, so good.

The guy is doing for us what he did back in the days of Fox -- putting together a legitimate team. This time, he has more experience and insight. It shows. And I think Marty is still chasing that ring he didn't get thanks to the Patriots back in '03.

Glad to see him back and darned impressed by what he has done so far.

Peppers was a DG signing but yeah I agree.

I haven’t had many issues with him since his return.  Other than (post deleted because user is not allowed to comment on PKs) and a couple draft picks, he’s done very well. Whatever happened with Breeland worked out for the best so who cares. No matter what happens, he made sensible moves, at the time. Not second-guessing aftwards if the moves were sound in the first place.

    • I liked him when he was at Michigan because I'm a Wolverine homer. After that...
    • Hello, soccer fans [crickets, tumbleweed flies by]. The World Cup kicks off in less than 2 weeks and, well, 🇺🇸USA USA USA🇺🇸 and all. We beat Senegal 3-2 yesterday in a tune-up friendly at BoA, with Christian Pulisic finally entering the scoring column.  How will we do in the World Cup once our tournament kicks off on the 12th? Well, there are 48 teams (assuming Iran is there) and it feels like one of two thing happens: we get grouped for the first time since '98, or we make it to the Round of 16 for the third time in the last four World Cups. I tried out the lottery for an Atlanta game and struck out, so yesterday was as World Cup as I'll get for in-person ($285/ticket for like Norway vs $39/ticket for USMNT right beforehand was a layup).  The U.S. has a travel-heavy schedule in group play, playing in LA, Seattle and LA. Real road warrior mentality being built. Glad the east coast gets worse kickoff times for a NA World Cup than a Qatar World Cup.
    • Well, that's the thing. Drafting players only for their physical measurables as you are suggesting only really happened during 2024, and X unfortunately has become the poster child for that. To be clear, it's not necessarily about drafting RAS over skill, but RAS over NFL-readiness and/or a solid body of work. Lots of players show skill in college, but those skills don't necessarily translate to the NFL for a multitude of reasons. But, getting back to the main point, to be clear, I believe that our FO is still enamored with physical gifts (who wouldn't be?), but now they're letting Dr. Eric Eager's proprietary system--his "secret sauce" prioritize the players that the Panthers draft, and it seems like it weighs not only a solid body of work, relative to a college career of course, but consistent gradual improvement as evidenced by production pretty highly.
