If this was an actual conversation, then that is all you need to know about having the right coach for the job. We need to hire someone to help him with the most basic part of his job. This getting worse by the day.

Guess the Rams should go ahead and fire Sean McVay then.

I think you’d be surprised by the number of teams that have clock specialists.

How many games, at any level, had Sean McVay been a head coach before getting the Rams job? They didn’t go get someone after 8 years because of his complete incompetence in handling it. Context helps.

I never met a HC that would even let an asst. control it. What does a clock management specialist tell you that you are not already supposed to know as a HC?

So you’re saying that since it was his first coaching job they just assumed they needed a clock management coach to help him? What sense does that make?

Clock management issues are pretty common - just Google a team and clock management - and it’s becoming common to have a coach that specializes in clock situational analytics. Just like many teams have salary cap expects to assist GMs.

Even as an avowed Rivera critic, I don't see a problem with hiring a game management coach. It's a good idea.

Worth noting that clock management was one of Norv Turner's weak points when he was a head coach also.

With that said, it is true that gameday coaching is one of Rivera's weak points.

Timeouts, challenges, clock management, these are all things quantifiable and use actual data to figure out the best course of action. The Panthers should absolutely have one for Rivera and any other future coach. One less thing for the future coach to worry about on gamedays so that he can focus on more important issues.

It’s part of your job. An easy part. But I would understand it, though very little, for a 1st timer. And even then....why? Who doesn’t know when to stop the clock? Besides RR?

And it’s the same with GMs. How hard is basic math? Why do you need a expert? Does no one actually do their job anymore?

What else is the HC doing during the game? I’ve never been part of a staff like that. Are we just going to prop him up on the yard marker? This is sad. Not Panthers-wise, society wise.

Take out the "should" aspect of it. I can agree on that, but you have to deal with reality.

Facts that you have to work around:

- Ron Rivera is going to be the Panthers head coach next year

- Ron Rivera is bad at clock management.

That situation leaves you with two options:

- Try to make him better at it

- Get someone else to do it

I don't think Option 1 is realistic, so I'd go for Option 2.

Does it point up a deficiency? Yeah, but we already knew that.  Just gotta hope for now that this fixes that one issue.

Obviously, it's not gonna fix everything.

I actually feel bad just painting RR with this. Laziness and incompetence have reached a new level and it ain’t just him. This is where analytics start backfiring in football. It was simple 30 years ago, it’s simple now. Or should be. Why do I need some geek telling me when to call a TO.

I honestly think RR would be pissed if he was approached about it. Being old school. But he doesn’t have much choice.
