February Mock Drafts

Recommended Posts

I'm going to try to do a mock every Sunday from now till the draft.

Here's my first one on Super Bowl Sunday. Your Picks:
Round 1 Pick 16: Williams, Greedy, CB, LSU (A)
Round 2 Pick 15: Allen, Zach, DE, Boston College (A-)
Round 3 Pick 13: McGovern, Connor, C, Penn State (A+)
Round 4 Pick 13: Tell III, Marvell, FS, Southern California (A+)
Round 5 Pick 16: Peters, Jamal, CB, Mississippi State (A+)
Round 6 Pick 14: Hollins, Justin, OLB, Oregon (A+)

Almost everything pre-combine is pointing to an early run on the premium Dline talent and the WRs and DBs being pushed down to near the bottom half of the draft. So more than likely we'll have either the best saftey or best CB at 16. At that point you're pretty much looking over project DEs and OTs, even though those are our top positions of need we can't reach for them if no ones there. Of course the combine could change everything and push Williams way up the board and maybe push one of the top 4 DEs down to us, who knows.

The pick I'd want the most is DE Nick Bosa but of course he'll probably go 1-4 , basically a Myles Garrett or Joey Bosa situation. DE is by far and away our greatest position of need and we're just unfortunate to have a mid round pick in a year that isn't too good for top shelf offensive talent, that pushes up the defensive talent.

Its just impossible to rebuild the entire oline and dline in one draft , but this is  a step in the right direction I'd hope. We are in really dire need of hitting on 1 or 2 Dline picks  in this draft after Ealy and D.Hall busting and us wasting a pick on Vernon in 2016. And lately going mostly on offensive skill position players high in the last couple of drafts, all combined to us being in the current crap-tastic situational of oline and dline being in shambles.

With the way this one fell, I wasn't super impressed with any of my options in RD 1 so I decided to go best available pass rusher. After that, I focused on building the trenches while also picking up the best available SS.

Saunders in the 5th might be my favorite pick as he has future pro bowler written all over him and probably wont be available past the 3rd round in the actual draft.

Evans and Edoga have a chance to start right away at LT while also shoring up badly needed tackle depth.

Bradbury is basically a younger version of Ryan Kalil and Lindstrom is a mauler in the run game.

16: R1P16
EDGE JACHAI POLITE
FLORIDA
47: R2P15
C GARRETT BRADBURY
NC STATE
77: R3P13
G CHRIS LINDSTROM
BOSTON COLLEGE
99: R3P35
S JAQUAN JOHNSON
MIAMI
115: R4P13
OT BOBBY EVANS
OKLAHOMA
155: R5P16
DL KHALEN SAUNDERS

Your Picks:
Round 1 Pick 16: Burns, Brian, DE, Florida State (A-)
Round 2 Pick 15: Omenihu, Charles, DE, Texas (B)
Round 3 Pick 13: Bradbury, Garrett, C, North Carolina State (A-)
Round 4 Pick 13: Jordan, Michael, OG/C, Ohio State (A+)
Round 5 Pick 16: Nauta, Isaac, TE, Georgia (A+)
Round 6 Pick 14: Scott, L.J., RB, Michigan State (A+)

So the more and more you listen and watch what they are doing.  The more and more I think they will implement a 3-4 this year vs 4-3.

This is banking on us not getting a big splash front 7 guy in FA.

I get it we need to focus on protecting Cam and improving the OL.  So people will cry.  But the point blank, out Defense was AWFUL this past year especially the front 7.  We faced OLs Much worse than our this past year, and we couldn't even lay a hand on the QB.  Eli Manning got hir less than even their training camp when they are in the red "dont touch the QB" jersey.

Rivera is a defensive coach, a former DC, and a former player on D.  We have drafted high on offense the last few years.  We have to fix this D.

1st: Burns, can't play the 4-3 DE but is a helluva prospect at 3-4 OLB. He is light, but tall, long, with a frame to add more.  He has tremendous bust and bend.  He will be a playmaker in this new D.

2nd: Charles Omenihu- this kid watching him at Texas this year, and at the Senior bowl.  He reminds me of Calais Campbell so dam much.  Campbell was a Stud at 3-4 DE at Arizona.  Watching Omenihu power through guys and rushing Really well inside on OGs.  This kid could plus right into our new D

3rd: Garrett Bradbury- he is probably still the #2 Center in this draft.  And as strong as this draft is, may Very well be around with our 3rd pick

Now they didnt have our 3rd comp so I have to shift it here.

3rd comp: Michael Jordan- solid OG who just happens to fall.  Fits into the hole Norwell left

4th: Isaac Nauta- we just resigned Manhurtz to a 2 year deal.  But you still just pass up on a good prospect.  Nauta is a better athlete and pass catcher, and imo a Much better blocker.

5th: Anthony Ratliff Williams- great Hands, Really good athlete, tremendous upside.  Not a big WR (but I see us moving on from those guys to guys who get good seperation).  Williams, no one talks about because he played in a Terrible team, a QB situation worse than DJ Moores at Maryland, the only Weapon where teams just focused on him solely.  And still raw, as he came to UNC (from Butler HS in Charlotte) as a QB transitioning to QB.

LJ Scott- compliment RB, and a Solid backup

Like how everyone is putting in multiple picks in the trenches, we definitely need it lol.

I think I'm going to make a couple of mocks every Sunday till the draft. Things are starting to get a bit more interesting considering we have the combine coming up soon, then free agency not too long after that, and then we have a decent chunk of time to wait till the draft in late April.

Here's my February 17th edition :

Round 1 Pick 16: Williams, Jonah, OT/OG, Alabama (A)
Round 2 Pick 15: McGovern, Connor, C, Penn State (B+)
Round 3 Pick 13: Tell III, Marvell, FS, Southern California (A)
Round 4 Pick 13: Alexander, Ed, DT, LSU (A+)
Round 5 Pick 16: Ledbetter, Jonathan, DE, Georgia (A+)
Round 6 Pick 14: Holyfield, Elijah, RB, Georgia (A+)

Alright, this draft basically assumes we got spent most of our cap on a big name FA pass rusher. 3 huge names could become free agents depending on whether their teams sign them down or franchise them (Demarcus Lawerence, JaDeveon Clowney, Trey Flowers ).

This makes us a lot more flexible in the draft. Both Rivera and Tepper have been quoted in the offseason saying we need to imrpove the oline, and oddly enough there's a lot of pretty solid Oline talent in the first 3 rounds or so.

Here I got Jonah Williams without trading up, I could honestly see this happening after having a not so hot National Championship Performance and possibly not blowing the combine out of the water. Theres been quite a few OTs rising up the draft boards lately for whatever reason, but I'm guessing that'll get cleared up at the combine and pro days coming up soon.

We might have to let Daryll Williams walk if we sign one of those 3 big name DEs above. We could let T.Moton play his natural RT and let Jonah go to LT, stick McGovern in as our sparkly new Center to hopefully replace R.Kalil, and probably move Larsen in to LG (or have him be C and McGovern play LT, who knows). Point is there's going to be a lot of reshuflling of the oline on the left 3 positions and I wouldn't mind sinking some high draft capital into finally being able to keep elite pass rushers off of cams blind side.

Tell is a free saftey that we pretty much need, he might not be good enough to start but at least we'll have Tell and Gaulden to try to groom into the next FS of the future, while hopefully having Searcy or some vet FS back there to start the season.

Alexander and Ledbetter are Dline picks but mid-rounders, if either of them does decently thats a huge bonus for us.

Holyfield answers the backup RB question for very cheap.

I'll probably do a trade down senario next Sunday.

Here's my weekly Sunday edition mock for 2/24. Traded down once with the Browns, traded down again with the Jags all the way to the top of round 2. Didn't see any players that really struck my interest in the middle of round 1. Both those trade down and our comp pick has us now with 10 picks in the draft.

Traded up a with a couple of our 3rd round picks, to get R3P1 to get Trey Adams OT

Focused on rebuilding the Oline early :

Round 2 Pick 6 (JAX): McGovern, Connor, C, Penn State (B)
Round 2 Pick 8 (BUF): Benzschawel, Beau, OG, Wisconsin (B+)
Round 2 Pick 15: Bryant, Austin, DE, Clemson (B+)
Round 3 Pick 1 (ARI): Adams, Trey, OT, Washington (A)
Round 3 Pick 36 (COMP): Tell III, Marvell, FS, Southern California (A+)
Round 4 Pick 7 (JAX): Christmas, Demarcus, DT, Florida State (A+)
Round 4 Pick 13: Pratt, Germaine, OLB, North Carolina State (A+)
Round 5 Pick 16: Peters, Jamal, CB, Mississippi State (A+)
Round 6 Pick 14: Anderson, Rodney, RB, Oklahoma (A+)

I think this would be a really interesting draft if we go with a hybrid 3-4/4-3.

There’s no doubt about it, at the range where we are picking OLBs are more abundant than 4-3 ends.
