There's a bit of an age difference, a trend difference and a role difference...

They're the same age, smart guy.

Cole had 300 yards a couple years ago, 600 yards last year. Smith was injured. Not much of a difference.

You're also the one that emphatically said it would be "retarded" to trade Funchess.

Coming off of his 2017 season it would have been. A season like his 2018 changes things

Still is. One is on the rise, one is falling off.

If you wanna compare stats, do the whole thing instead of trying to cherry pick.

Guaranteed or not, I can't in any way endorse giving five million to a guy who's realistically your sixth or seventh receiving option; especially not when you could have cut him and re-signed for less.

As to Reid, someone else pointed out that it's hard to compare his contract to the ones being signed now because those are going to the top guys on the market. The contracts that get signed by guys after the early feeding frenzy calms down will be the better comparison.

I do agree with not being involved in the early insanity, but let's be real. With our cap space, it's not like that was an option.

Yeah let’s tear up Smith’s non-guaranteed $5 million that we can clear completely off the books any time we want, and re-sign him now for a cheaper total but with undoubtedly some guaranteed money attached...you’re really showing Hurney who the smart GM is. Who cares about contract flexibility, right?

Would you rather have Smith under contract at this moment for $5 million non-guaranteed dollars, or for $3 million with $1.5 million guaranteed?

Smith has zero leverage to get anything guaranteed.

So I was "retarded" in predicting that the franchise would have been better off parting ways and getting value to fill other positions of need. Got it. Sure am glad we had him dropping passes and eating up playing time from our better, younger receivers.

It's silo thinking like yours that Hurney subscribes to.

Im not backing off the Torrey Smith deal. Weddle is making the exact same $ that torrey is per year. Our entire safety group is Reid and literal piles of dog poo.

Basically this.   So much this.

Your team's number four (and that's being generous) receiving option not making as much as other teams' top two to three receiving threats is not exactly something to crow about.

If you wanna compare his contract to other receivers as far down the depth chart as he is, then you've at least got a valid measure.

This make-believe land you live in where a vet like Smith signs a contract with zero guarantees in March...is this also the place where we can sign top-tier safeties for ~$5 million per year? We have to book Hurney a ticket there ASAP if we want any chance of salvaging our offseason!

Yeah, Smith would have been a real hot commodity out there :)

    • Apparently the extension he signed before the season was also a little weird, as it had a very low signing bonus. So the Jets have a very small dead cap hit despite trading a big contract that was signed just 2 months ago. I guess it was only a $13 million signing bonus, and trading him mid-season means it's something around only a $10 million dead cap hit left to take. This is a huge win for the Jets for a player I've long felt was overrated because of a great nickname and an amazing rookie season that he's then failed to fully live up to since them.  Combine that with everyone knowing the Colts seem more mirage then legit long term contender, that 2027 1st in particular could end up being a really good asset for the Jets.
    • Steichen has the offense operating at a super high efficiency with JT/Pittman/Warren/Downs.  The OL is strong. The D - the front 7 has been sneaky good.  They don't instill much fear but do enough.  Buckner is stil playing at a high level.  It's a good system on both sides of the ball.  Blue chip players now at every position group.   Overall, the NFL is wide open right now. Seahawks, Colts, Patriots, Rams, & Bills are at the top of the mid-season hill - which is just wild Lions, Bucs, Broncos, Chargers* are in contention/okay spots (LAC is losing guys left and right though) Chiefs, Philly still linger, you can never discount. Steelers, 49ers are around as always.
