NFL: Russell Wilson thinking of "the biggest contract ever"

If I were them I would trade him, get as much as I could and choose a new QB.

Seattle was winning when Russell was cheap,.. and just like clockwork, went bad when his(and others and others injuries— not putting it all on him) contract turned huge.

This isn’t baseball, there’s a salary cap. If you want to make more money— get transcendent and become a brand.

Great post.  The playoffs sure had a lot of teams with first contract QBs in it.  (7 of the 12 and the other QBs were top  names)

I'd have to agree it's getting to a point where the bubble is going to burst.

A lot of the QBs who got blockbuster contracts don't have championships to show for it.

The playoffs had a lot of  teams  with first-contract QBs.  Going from memory: KC, LAR, Texans, Ravens (depending how you look at it) Bears, Cowboys, Eagles--that is  7 of the  12 playoff teams.  Who were the other QBs?  Great QBs, not merely good ones:  Brees, Brady, Rivers,  Luck, and Russell (the only good,  not great, veteran QB in the playoffs--some  would argue with  me).

Bottom  line--if my QB is not elite, I  do not pay him $25-30m.  period.  Do not care what others are making.   Let him go and find a rookie, build the support around that rookie.

That’s what I’m saying. Even with KC, 4 years from now if they haven’t won a SB and are still getting to playoffs, not putting one down, get into salary cap problems and then this guy wants $35 million a year guaranteed.... trade him.

You have to choose Jerseys or Super Bowl.

i really believe some teams don’t care about Superbowls— they love the stars and Jerseys.

Really it comes down to loving the team or loving fantasy—

Marcus Mariotta will be the next Seahawks QB, if Wilson wants to play hardball. Pete/John don't want to pay players anymore. See what they did to the Legion of Boom and that great Defense that took them to 2 SBs?

Bennett, Cliff, Earl,  Sherman, made their money are now elsewhere. Couldn't pay them.

This year will determine a lot.  Shoulder--and  Cam has taken  a beating.  You have to wonder if they will reconsider a  long-term investment in a 31-year old, battered QB.  As he ages, his threat to run decreases; RBs hit the wall around 28.  How effective will he be when they can shadow him with a defensive Tackle?  I am thinking like a skeptical GM, but this is business that will impact your franchise for a half decade.  Love and feelings are for another place and time.

I know a lot of people believe we'll just throw whatever Newton's agent wants at him when the time comes.  I'm not so sure of that.

Besides everything you mention, Tepper isn't necessarily as tied to Cam as Richardson was, and he may not be willing to set the market on a QB.

Of course a thread about Wilson becomes another discussion about when we can push Cam out the door.

The price for quality QB play in the NFL isn't going down anytime soon, so ya'll either need to accept it or get used to rooting for a very bad team for several years.

Some of these athletes are brand material and have built brands out there that make a lot of money outside of football.

in those cases I would ask them if being remembered for actually doing something with the football career is important or being the highest paid at their position.

Tom Brady makes a lot of money,.. and people can say what they want to about his wife making what she does, but Tom can make any amount of money he wants outside of football any time he wants to— obviously he knows that and is ok winning Super Bowl after Superbowl

others don’t seem to do that. We will see what’s most important to Cam— and of course that will depend on what this season looks like for him— the high percentage completion rate was great, but that doesn’t transfer to wins like a lot of other stats that he used to have—

assuming he did return to 80% of what he was, I wonder what is most important to him being that he’s done a pretty good job branding himself out there.

more QBs should be like Brady, taking less salary so the team can build around him. It's one of the reasons NE is so successful.

Wouldn't hold my breath on that one...

MHS is right that some teams have tried going all in while their highly drafted QBs are still in a rookie contract. The Rams would be a prime example of that approach.

I suspect most would tell you they can do both, though history hasn't really borne that out in the majority of cases.

Yep I would just have someone point out on something simple to understand a list of teams with the highest paid quarterback ever playing winning superbowls versus those teams tanking in the years following those contracts,..
