How early would you take a QB?

You draft the BPA. If that happens to be a QB that would sit and learn behind Cam while we see if he’s healthy or not, then so be it. We could easily draft a QB in the first and have him sit behind Cam for a year or two.

That’s BPA based on what you need first. Putting guys in clusters of what their draft value and then having your needs the next season are there side by side.

no one just says BPA— what they mean is they have a plan for their needs in the coming seasons.

And if that were also true, since every single draft prospect ranking list out there has Daniel Jones in the 30s-50s range then the earliest he’s the BPA with anything else disregarded is in the 30s

so If he’s the 31st best player, the Rams are drafting him?

32nd New England? That would make sense for them— Tom is fighting time but time always wins.

anyone drafting him earlier is not going BPA only

I must have missed that in the NFL rule book....so you're saying that's mandatory huh?

Question for you, what's the single characteristic all of the very best (Brady, Peyton, Brees, Wilson, Rodgers, etc) NFL QB's share?  Some are tall, some are short, some are very athletic, others are not, but there's one thing they all have in common....actually there's two, both are non-physical.

I can tell you that the operating weight of a M1A1 tank is 64 tons and 71 tons with a mine plow installed, has a gyro assisted M865 Rheinobol 125mm main gun that can traverse completely within 7 seconds, has computer automated firing solutions with 50 variables, 12 that can be manually input, track and kill helicopters as well as tanks, APC and troops. The front 1 inch of depleted uranium followed by 2 feet of chobham based armor has an equivalency of over 20 feet of steel. The tank is equipped with Nuclear, Biological and chemical systems that double great as an AC system, and it’s impervious to EMP and even nuclear blast out to 10 miles from ground zero.

and yes drafting a quarterback in the first round is a starter for your team, not a backup. That’s pretty much a rule

in other words— who cares about Daniel Jones— I don’t.

This is a terrible QB draft at the top,  but the Grier-Thorson range could be decent.  Still, with needs for starters (Edge, S,  OG) you really can't start thinking depth until the second pick in the 3rd round.

If we pick a QB early, it is because Cam is more questionable than we hoped.  Still, starting any rookie from this draft class is not good.

Honestly, I think Grier would be the perfect backup.  His football IQ is off the charts--would help the starter (mentally) and with our weapons (CMC, Moore, Samuel, Thomas, etc.) he might be the best fit for this offense.  Rain poo if you want, but I have spoken!

I've never been real big on rules....especially not made up ones.

If Joe Lacob had followed the "rules" Steve Kerr wouldn't be the coach of the Golden State Warriors.  Here's a great quote from Lacob explaining it to those who couldn't rationalize the selection because their brains were constrained by all sorts of fake "rules":

"Yes, it's true, (Kerr) has not coached before. But this is what management is all about. You have to be able to pick people, and he is incredibly prepared…Every detail you can imagine. He knew our roster in and out. He had assistant coaches he wanted to go after. It was like a tour de force. Look, at the end of the day I know he knows a lot about basketball. We're taking a little bit of a risk on his coaching ability, but we did that with Mark and it worked. So it's just about finding the right fit for the organization and a guy who has extremely high potential, is a hard worker and is very prepared. That's what we have got."

-----------------------------------------------------------------

One need look no further than the inimitable New England Patriots to see that outside-the-box thinking is what differentiates a franchise in this league....

....you think they care about "rules"?

Ok obviously this whole thing by you is a hand grenade to stir stuff up.

theres no way you can actually be serious.

one thing for sure is that it’s good you are not the GM of the panthers.

the Falcons Bucs or Saints should hire you so we would beat their ass continually from here on out.

go draft a backup quarterback with a first round pick, be an innovator for sure pal.

they will never see it coming.

did you lift your pinki up while typing that and sipping on your Stella?

5 franchise or close enough QBs in 25 years in the 3rd or later. Throw in Romo as an UDFA and you get 6. I posted this earlier, but we’ve drafted or signed (for the UDFA correctors) half as many all-pro/pro-Bowl OL in the 3rd or later in the past 5 years. There’s tons of solid starters at other positions in the past 25 years. There’s a better chance that we draft at least 1 3rd or later QB every year and get nothing in the next 25 years than we’ll unearth a Brady or Romo. Maybe in next year’s stronger QB class you’ll get lucky with a Wilson (or Cousins who’s far more mediocre than franchise), but in a weak class, the chance of getting him is nil.

The chance of us getting an Everson Griffin in the 3rd or 4th is so much higher than getting a QB good enough to even remotely take over for Cam especially in their rookie year.

Agree you can get more if you look at the other 21 positions than just quarterbacks. That is a simple numbers game given we draft more at other positions than quarterback. And of course most positions are easier to learn and master than QB hence the better boom rate. But you miss the point. Franchise quarterbacks don't just pop up to pick up like we did with Irvin at OLB for example and the cost to pick one that is proven is extremely prohibitive. So the point is that since any position can be a crap shoot and more quarterbacks than any other position bust regardless of round, it makes sense to pick quarterbacks more often rather than less often given that the bust rate is higher not lower. It seems counter intuitive to the linear thinkers but makes sense if you figure that the cost for a middle rounder isn't high and the reward if you find a guy is substantial. Plus you have several guys who could at least be a backup even if they never are a starter. So your percentage arguments are not the point. We all agree on that. But how valuable was Brady when they did find him.  Enough to swing for the fences often, even if you come up empty 90% of the time in my humble opinion. After all it is one pick and not a high one. There is more pressure to get it right with a high pick than lower one. So go ahead and pick one often. If you miss, big deal. But if you hit you can set yourself for a decade or longer. High risk but even higher reward.

Oh I'm dead serious.  Your brain is constrained by a bunch of "rules"....you can't think outside the box.  Have you ever considered what might be garnered by trading Cam?  I bet you haven't because of some "rule" in your brain.  Great owners & managers consider ALL possible options.

I'm not saying Cam should be traded, but I guarantee you it is something David Tepper has put some thought into.

You ever been to England?  Walk into any pub and say "give me a wife-beater please"....they will hand you a Stella.  One of the more masterful marketing ruses ever put over on the American public, over there Stella is considered to equivalent to our Pabst Blue Ribbon.  It's the beer guys who wear wife-beater t-shirts drink.

I prefer Natural Light!  Or a good bottle of Southern Tier...

Haha—lived in London for 3 years pal.

and half the guys that go to Duke games wear wife beaters so why not.

as far as rules—

drafting a backup quarterback in the first round is a no go.

if you draft a quarterback in the first round that means you are moving on from your current quarterback.

so if you want Daniel Jones because you have a Duke man crush on the guy so the Panthers can DEFINITELY move on from Cam because you don’t like him just man up and say it.

If there was a quarterback that I wanted more than I want to keep Cam Newton then I would say it.

This draft is full of turds for quarterbacks.

it says something when you want to draft a turd with our first round pick to replace the guy who has put the Panthers in relavency talks the last 8 years.

man up

Again, you're ability to analyze is constrained by imaginary rules....not to mention what is apparently some sort of perverse hatred for Duke.

You are unwilling to (or incapable of) consider the worst case scenario and as such are not capable of preparing for it.

Sir you keep dancing around your bottom line hiding behind the CBD oil you are vaping over there or the natural lights you are slamming.

you said draft Daniel Jones at 16. You have argued that it’s ok to draft a backup quarterback at 16 and are acting like that is some arbitrary rule to be broken by a mastermind. Then you sidestepped Potomac style saying drafting our franchise replacement is on the table.

say what it is that you want. Man up.

What I see reading from your posts is that you have a man crush on Jones and Duke—- if that’s the case just say it.

underlying is a want to move on from Cam— just say it if that’s what you want.

My opinion is we can draft a dependable backup if need be in later rounds but not the future franchise QB at this time.

if you believe trading Cam as you said and drafting the future NOW— say it.

then everyone will debate you on who a new franchise QB would look like.

drugs are bad

@Verge 's guy, who is an NFL scout of some sort,  says Jones will be the 2nd QB taken and also a top-10 overall pick.

He may very well be but a more likely scenario is he is drafted by the Saints or New England late in the first. He can sit behind 2 HOF for 2-3 seasons. Both of those teams need quarterbacks in the future and both teams have pieces around them to support and win.

like PFF says, he’s not even in the top 50. So for me he’s mid 2nd earliest but not more like 3rd round

oh and I noticed, Will Grier is is in the top 30 and rated higher than Daniel Jones as well-- again, not in the top 50.

    • If you need someone to run your multi-billion dollar business, maaayyyybe don't hire a guy whose previous work experience includes repeated blows to the head and literal brain damage but IDK.
    • Extrapolate that with every QB for that matter. I guarantee you there's quite a bit of missed opportunities and yards left on the field for everyone. Many NFL QBs deal with WRs not putting in A+ effort, subpar o-line play and other deficiencies. The great ones are able to rise above these issues and create opportunities for plays. Guys like Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes can both play in and out of structure, as well as find ways to get yards when things break down and mask mistakes by throwing guys open, creating opportunities from nothing, etc. Bryce Young has only shown he's able to make things happen when the rest of the team picks up his slack. Very rarely does he create those opportunities himself. When this is a consistent pattern year after year with Bryce where he shows up lackluster, it's a concern. This is year three and he should be elevating the team as a first overall pick this franchise traded up for.  He was far from elevating anyone against JAX. In fact, he needed others to elevate and create for him. Excuses may be fine for a rookie, but this is year three for the first overall pick. Not looking good so far.
    • I think the worst issue is coaching. Countless bad snaps, XL not getting his feet in or trying on runs plays, our centre being down field when he didn't need to be. All seem to be from poor coaching for me. I believe Canales is to soft to rip the players a new one when the fug up. Plus I honestly believe that Canales is slow getting his plays in giving Bryce less time to diagnose and adjust to the defence. Don't worry I could of head butted Bryce for that fumble and the 4th down throw aways but the other plays are explainable to me
