Couple of quick things from Henson's notes yesterday

I'm impressed by how smart Burns is. Smart players on defense make everything better and they tend to have long, productive careers. He's joining with some of the best back there and I think it's going to pay dividends very quickly.

An Edge player who understands that there is more to the position than just crashing towards the QB is a very, very good thing.

And TE depth... let's face it, they are really competing for the TE1 spot next season. That should be the goal of each of those working at that position this summer. Greg might have another good season in him, and I sure hope he does, but after that... it sure would be nice to have a verified Olsen 2.0 on the team already.

There are several HCs who will be the ones running the offense or defense and the person with the title of coordinator basically just makes sure the right things are done in practice and the right guys are on the field. They are basically just glorified OC or DC assistants. I don't have a problem with this concept. If you are really good or one of the best at calling an offense or defense, why in the world would you hand that responsibility over to someone else even if you're HC?

Rivera is/was one of the best DCs in the game.  Norv is a legendary OC. Best way to ensure we get the best from both sides of the ball is to have the best person making the calls for them.

hmmm...then why did RR wait until he hired a complete boner for the job and watch him fail miserably for a half season before taking the reins?

Did he call plays for McD? No.

Wilks? Nope.

He had to bail Washington out and then just kept him like we're supposed to be ok or excited about it?  AND were changing systems?  Brilliant!

Im well aware of others being place holders b/c the HC just doesn't have the time to be all places at once.  This is a placeholder b/c our HC is too scared to fire ppl even when they deserve it.

Honest opinion, he didn't do it earlier because he had loyalty issues that a great HC wouldn't have. He should have done it much earlier and a better HC who is more concerned with winning than being a good mentor would have done it earlier. I think Rivera was forced to make the decision because I don't have faith he would have on his own.

With McD and even Wilks, I think Rivera had guys who could do a good job running the defense. I don't think they could do it as well as Rivera, but still good enough. When it came to Washington, Rivera had rose colored glasses and thought that he was going to be next in a line of good DCs. Obviously he wasn't.

I don't think Rivera is a great HC, but I do think that the best thing for the team right now is him running the defense and Norv running the offense. I don't care what Washington does it what his title is or why he's still on the team. As long as we've got someone running the D that can help take it back to dominant levels again, I'm fine.

RR calling the plays is not my issue.  Of course he’s better at it.  It’s what got him a HC gig in the first place.  It’s just another Derp move by a DC in a HC’s role.  Another Derp move by this wishy washy organization.  Just another wtf moment in the life of a Panthers fan.

Edit:  Reminder this is the same org who brought back a GM they fired to do the same poo again.

Well, he doesn't seem to be doing the same poo again, and I doubt that's why J-Rich brought him back (being the businessman that he is).

Tepper told you why Hurney was here last season and will be with us this season.

You seem to be whining about a lot without being able to articulate specifically why you’re upset, beyond “ugh incompetent FO with their stupid decisions”. It’s a very simple question: how does having Washington as a figurehead DC harm the team? The reality of the situation is that we now have arguably a top 3 defensive mind calling the plays for us on game day. You can criticize what has LED us to our current situation (I.e. Ron promoting Washington and not taking over playcalling sooner), but as we currently stand, I don’t know what move you want us to make that will lead to a better situation than we are at...with Ron taking the reins.

Just take 10% of your whine and reinvest that into a proposal on what you would like to see from the FO that would improve the team’s outcome. That’s a lot more conducive to fruitful discussion than just reiterating a hundred times that you’re upset and everything is stupid and how dare Ron have the nerve to do something and not consider MY feelings.

I mean...imagine a politician campaigning on the platform that the state of the country is in disarray and the status quo must change and our country is destined for failure.

-“Okay, what are your policies? How do you propose we fix this?”

-“Did you not hear me?? EVERYTHING SUCKS!”

    • Let's be completely honest about this... Our WR room is AT and a bunch of question marks. Thielen is the only guy we know who knows the route tree completely, understands play calls and can regularly get open/beat close coverage when necessary. He's long in the tooth, isn't the speediest guy on the field but he plays like a pro, starting level wide receiver. Xavier, last season looked great at first, but man he kind of petered out down the stretch and would disappear in a number of games. He wasn't reliable on routes or getting open and where he was supposed to be a king at contested catches, he often looked a bit intimidated. I'm not saying he's a washout by any means. Anyone with his size, speed and catch radius could make it big in the NFL, but can he do it? He'll need to show more than he did in the preseason before we can really rely on him as a WR1 or WR2.  Coker was a revelation last season, he really played way above his (non)draft status and flashed multiple times in games and was a steady performer. What we need to find out, though, is whether he was benefiting from being an unknown that wasn't getting maximum effort from opposing DBs or if he was just outworking and outhustling everyone on the field. We should find out this season. We sure as hell didn't find out much in the pre-season (from him or any receiver or QB for that matter). He's still a question mark, but I think he has the look of the real deal. He might be this generation's next Thielen. Now, let's talk about Tet. High first round draft pick, first true WR off the board this year. Stellar career out west in college. Has the swagger of the WR1. And man, y'all are going to get mad about this but... he comes across as a mook. And in the pre-season he performed, well, not so great against poor opposition of second and third stringers. Yeah, he caught that one moonshot ball in the first game but really, nothing else lighting the place up. Rookie endzone drop in that game, too. He's still young and adjusting, I'm sure, but I was hoping to see something of a breakthrough kind of guy. I'm still looking. Hunter Renfro? Gosh, I hope he can make the team and make a comeback to his old form. It would be such a great story. But maybe neither one of those happens. We won't know until Tuesday and then, if he makes it past there it could be weeks. So, TL;DR: AT is all we can bank on right now. We couldn't afford to let him go considering the number of unknowns we'd be throwing out there for our QB, who himself is still an unknown. One thing to add: Our receivers coaching group has their work cut out for them. I hope they are up to the task, but the pre-season gave me little reason to believe in them. And I really need something to believe in here in Carolina.
    • Same I think Randsom is a baller..... hopefully we don't have to suffer through 4-8 games of Scott blowing azz to get him on the feild.
    • Linebacker is the biggest need - I hope we figure out a way to address it. Krys Barnes is the only one who even moderately flashed.  Super nervous about Trevin/Rozeboom as a duo (Still like Trevin) I'd be excited if we had a better vet to mentor Trevin.  Or a better younger guy to support Rozeboom.  They just don't fit well and it may be a big problem against the run, even with our DL much improved.
