I'm not even sure this was the case anymore.  Cam needed a real OC to grow.

No, well yes, we did need a better OC, but Smitty did need to leave for Cam to grow.  At that time, we needed Cam to step up as THE leader of the team, but Smitty was such a strong and vocal presence that it was almost impossible for Cam to grow into what he needed to be and since has.  According to people inside the locker room, Smitty would often challenge Cam and was a bit dismissive of him at times.  That's not saying Smitty was being a jerk or cancer or anything, just that he felt that as a long-term vet he knew better (that last was just the impression of someone who was there).

At the time, Cam needed to earn his place, but I don't think Smitty realized how big a force he was/is, and how it inhibited Cams ability grow into his full potential as a leader.  The thing is that I honestly believe that the Cam of today would get along great with the Smitty of that time (on the field, I've never heard that there was any off the field issues).  In fact, I think they would be a dynamite force and very difficult to contain.

With that said, Gettleman should have handled the situation with more tact.  I really think that if he would have talked to Smitty man to man, the transition would have been so much smoother and Steve wouldn't have been nearly as upset.  But, from what I understand, hearing about it through the media is what really set Smitty off.

Yea, everything you said was true. Smitty did need to move on so Cam could take the next step. The only fug up Gettleman made in the Smitty release was not telling him to his face like a man. I guess he was worried about getting punched in the face and getting his nose or skull cracked. Gettleman did some good things for the Panthers but his personality was a bit too brash for the Carolinas.

Yeah, I don't think Gettleman got the emotional aspect of these things.  It seemed at times that to him it was almost as if he were just moving chess pieces on a board rather than making life altering decisions for the players.  And Smitty was always an emotional and reactive personality with a notorious chip on his shoulder, so anybody with even the most rudimentary understanding of him should have known that he would likely feel disrespected and wouldn't react well to hearing he is being evaluated through the media.

What makes me sick is knowing without any doubt in my mind, that none of the '15 Denver Broncos would have been able to handle him physically or mentally. What a much different game that could have been if he were around in Carolina. Steve Smith vs the 2015 Denver Broncos Secondary? My money is on Steve and I'm betting it all.

I'm glad Smitty has found peace with Tepper & the Panthers. Gettleman was smart, but just plain dumbass when it came to releasing players. Releasing Smith stabbed not just #89 in the heart, but all of us.

Honestly, I could care less about Deangelo Williams. Jonathon Stewart was the better man in Double Trouble.

People have different levels of IQ. Gettleman had a high football IQ, but a low emotional IQ.
